💪 Strength, Resilience and Rugby – Leyah Represents Aotearoa Overseas💪

A huge congratulations to Leyah Gerrard, who proudly represented Wairoa and New Zealand as part of the U18 Recode team at the Portugal Youth Rugby Festival.

Leyah, who plays prop and ho**er for Napier Girls’ High School First XV, spent weeks preparing and training before travelling overseas to compete against international teams. Playing against older and more experienced players pushed her outside her comfort zone and helped build confidence, resilience, and belief in her abilities.

All the hard work paid off when the U18 Recode team were crowned Portugal Youth Rugby Festival Grand Final Champions 👏🏆

Leyah’s journey is an awesome example of what can be achieved through dedication, hard work, and backing yourself.

We are proud to support rangatahi like Leyah who continue to represent Wairoa with pride on the world stage 💙

Wairoa pride right here! 👏

Huge congratulations to PCS Projects, named the 2026 Good Youth Employer of the Year by Youth Employability Aotearoa (YEA).

We are especially proud of WYAT client Rogan Baty, one of two WYAT clients who nominated Fred van der Sande for this award.

Fred summed it up perfectly:

“We’re working on the first social housing project in Wairoa, employing local rangatahi as the workforce. We ended up with the best group of workers I have ever had in my life.”

Rogan also shared what this support has meant for him:

“My employer makes me feel genuinely valued by regularly recognising my efforts and offering performance-based incentives, including extra pay when I do well. Beyond that, they give young people real opportunities—like when they offered me a carpentry apprenticeship just three months after hiring me at 19. They also act as mentors, always encouraging us and respecting that we have lives outside of work. That kind of support and belief in us makes a huge difference.”

This is what backing rangatahi looks like.

Real opportunities. Real mentoring. Real futures.

Ka mau te wehi PCS Projects. Wairoa is proud. 💚

Congratulations to our rangatahi from our Youth Services, He Poutama Rangatahi and MTFJ contracts who have successfully completed an Advanced Working at Heights course 👏

Delivered over two days, all participants worked hard and achieved great results. These rangatahi are now building pathways into careers such as scaffolding, roofing, roading infrastructure, and building, gaining practical skills that will support them moving forward into the workforce.

A big thank you to Shaun Clark from Vertical Horizonz New Zealand for delivering the training, and to the Wairoa Community Centre for the use of the high ropes course. It was great to see the facility being utilized again.

We are grateful for the strong relationships we have with organizations that continue to support and build our rangatahi, adding to their kete as they move into future pathways and personal development.

🔥 CACTUS 35 – Longest Day Done & Dusted 🔥

26 of our Rangatahi have officially crossed the line, completing the CACTUS “Longest Day”, a six-hour test of grit, resilience, and teamwork in tough conditions.

Starting at 6am and pushing through until 1pm, the day tested them both physically and mentally. By halfway, fatigue had set in and the heat was relentless but not one gave up. Instead, they dug deep, backed each other, and showed exactly what CACTUS is all about.

“As Chairperson of Wairoa Young Achievers Trust, I am incredibly proud of these Rangatahi and everything they have achieved. CACTUS is not easy, and that is exactly the point. It asks young people to dig deep, back one another, and discover strengths they may not have realised they had.”- James Baty, WYAT Chairperson

CACTUS continues to be WYAT’s longest standing programme, now in its 18th year, and remains a strong part of our community. It’s more than just a programme it’s a kaupapa that builds resilience, discipline, leadership, and belief in our rangatahi.

“What stood out was that no one gave up they dug deep, supported each other, and came through stronger. Every one of them earned their graduation.” – Denise Eaglesome-Karekare, WYAT CEO & CACTUS Co Ordinator.

One of the most powerful moments from this year’s graduation was seeing the true impact of CACTUS over time. One of our very first graduates from 2008 stood proudly on the sidelines watching her son complete CACTUS 35, a full circle moment that speaks to the generational change this kaupapa creates.

This graduation also marked the end of an era, as we farewell long-serving volunteer and Police officer Noui Whaanga. Noui has been part of CACTUS since the very beginning in 2008, dedicating years of service to supporting and mentoring our rangatahi. Through his work, he has helped break down barriers between young people and Police, opening pathways into Police and Defence careers, and building trust within our community. “Noui has been instrumental in breaking down barriers between rangatahi and Police. His presence, his consistency, and his belief in our rangatahi will be deeply missed, but his legacy will continue through the many lives he has influenced.” – Denise Eaglesome-Karekare. We acknowledge Noui for his commitment, his leadership, and the lasting impact he has made on generations of rangatahi, and wish him all the best as he takes up his new role at the Police College in Wellington.

CACTUS continues to be powered by our wider community. A huge mihi to our partners, supporters, and volunteers including Mahia Marines, NZ Army, NZ Police, QRS, Lighthouse Lions, and all those who give their time and energy to this kaupapa. Special thanks also to our sponsors, including The Commissioning Table, Kahungunu Executive, and New World for keeping our rangatahi fuelled throughout the Longest Day. “Our volunteers are the backbone of CACTUS… This programme has been running for 18 years because of the commitment, passion and belief of those who give their time.” – Denise Eaglesome-Karekare

To our CACTUS 35 graduates you’ve shown what is possible. From uncertainty to confidence, from doubt to belief. You’ve proven that when rangatahi are backed by their community, they can achieve anything. 💪🏽
