At the end of Term 3, we had the privilege of delivering the Get Firewise programme to the junior students at our local WaipΕ« Primary School.
Get Firewise, Fire and Emergency New Zealand’s fire safety education programme for Year 1 and 2 students, teaches valuable fire safety lessons such as recognising fire dangers, knowing what to do in the event of a fire, and understanding why they should never play with lighters or matches.
The fun and engaging programme has been developed alongside educators and teachers and aligns with the New Zealand Curriculum. It is designed to be delivered by teachers and includes a visit from firefighters to summarise and reinforce the key learning outcomes.
The students thoroughly enjoyed the programme and were highly engaged throughout the sessions. They especially loved meeting the firefighters and learning important fire safety skills in an interactive and memorable way.
Get Firewise has equipped hundreds of thousands of children with essential fire safety knowledge, giving them the confidence to act in emergencies and help protect their whānau. From understanding fire risks to creating escape plans, the programme has played an important role in helping build safer communities across Aotearoa.
We always enjoy the opportunity to support our local community through fire safety education and were delighted to see such enthusiastic participation from the students. Please enjoy some photos from our visit below.

A little bit of information for those that are interested in what happens sometimes when we get called out.
There are times when our communication center will assign an appliance to the call, but we decide to take the other appliance because of local knowledge in which case the fire siren might go again. You may have noticed this happened yesterday when we had 5 calls and 2 calls the day before.
We have 2 fire appliances.
161 is equipped mainly for fires.
167 is equipped mainly with rescue equipment and some firefighting equipment.
