Waipu River Walk - Community Led Project

Waipu River Walk - Community Led Project A project by the community, for the community. Te pū o te wai, te hononga tāngata
The rivers connect us all
An abhainn a tha gar ceangail comhla

In August 2019, Whangārei District Council allocated $100,000 to Waipu for a Community Led Project. The Waipu Community-Led Project Committee was formed in March 2020 with submissions and feedback for how the funding could be spent gathered from the community. The winning project was the Waipu River Walk proposal – a heritage rich area with green space for the people of Waipu and visitors to enjoy

. A blessing led by Patuharakeke Trust Board to unveil the entrance signs was held on the 16 July, officially opening Phase 1 of the Walk. Phase 1 details: the walk begins at the Waihoihoi Park and follows the river around to Nova Scotia Drive, where it connects with the existing footpath. By following the footpath back through the Waipu township to Waihoihoi Park, it makes a loop, taking about an hour to complete. Waipu River Walk meetings are held every second Thursday of the month in the Waipu Presbyterian Church Hall at 7.00pm. All are welcome and encouraged to come along. We use this page to keep everyone updated about the project progress, working bees, and any other news.

🌳 Big shoutout to our newest community hero in Waipu! 🌳
Please give a huge welcome to Lance Buckley from Cutting Edge Tree Removal! Call Lance for service if you need anything garden maintenance 027 467 1123.
Lance has only just arrived in our community and he’s already rolling up his sleeves and showing what he’s made of. This morning, a small but mighty team of just three tackled the overgrown trees, bushes and weeds along our walk.
Huge thanks to Beata, Peter, and Lance for their passion and hard work. They’ve completely opened up the beautiful river view from the benches — and the passers-by are loving it!
Round 2 is coming soon (those stubborn weeds aren’t going down without a fight), and we want to get it done before winter sets in.
Come and see the transformation in person or check out the before/after in the reel
If you’d like to join the next working bee, drop a comment or send us a message — we’ll let you know the date in advance.
Together we’re making Waipu beautiful 💪❤️

We’ve already spotted a few stunning, nature-made sculptures right here on our trail – twisted roots, balanced rocks, and whimsical tree formations that fuel the soul.
