This video shows a kiwi, we think possibly one of a pair, found down the south end of the Orongorongo river.

The Orongorongo Station now officially has kiwi!

A shout out to the two hunters Regan and Ethan who notified us of the find. What a treat!

Anyone seeing or hearing kiwi, please let us know as this helps us build a picture of their range.

🎄 Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year from the Remutaka Conservation Trust 🎄

Some big wins and heartwarming updates from the bush this season! 💚

🐦 Kiwi stories:
Marcel and Hemi are doing well — calls suggest they may be incubating a new nest after an earlier attempt didn’t succeed.

Gonzo and Camilla and their offspring were spotted on trail cameras, and other kiwi sightings show healthy activity across the park.

A wandering juvenile kiwi was safely relocated off a popular track thanks to community support - thanks Doug for letting us know!

🪤 Predator control & trap work:
Volunteers clocked over 16,000 trap checks this year! A large consignment of new DOC200 traps was purchased and many deployed by helicopter to help protect kiwi and other native species.

🐶 Kiwi Avoidance Training (KAT):
Another successful weekend of dog training saw dozens of dogs learn how to avoid kiwi, helping protect our taonga when out in the bush.

📸 New initiatives & community spirit:
A photo competition was launched in memory of beloved volunteer Cathye Haddock

Volunteers were honoured for years of dedication — including many with 10+ and 20+ years of service.

📣 Join & support:
Memberships make a great gift and help fund vital conservation work — from predator control to habitat restoration.

Robin and Sandy Toy led the conservation group Friends of Flora who translocated great spotted kiwi and whio 🦆 into the northern end of Kahurangi National Park (Mt Arthur).

They have written a book about Kahurangi and the incredible conservation efforts there. 📚

Sandy and Robin were key members of the Remutaka Conservation Trust back when we were hatching our plan to translocate North Island Brown kiwi. They learned all about kiwi and how to handle them through the Trust and helped organise a catching trip to Little Barrier Island, knowledge that they took with them when they moved to Motueka.

Well done Robin and Sandy on the publication of your book - we are grateful to be part of your journey and congratulations on the incredible success you have had down there.
