We cover the Hawarden Waikari area and work along side with 2 Fire And Emergency Urban Fire Brigades (Hawarden and Waikari). Being centrally located in the Hurunui we also attend large fires in the rest of the district. We also participate in community events e.g. local A&P shows, wine and food festivals and many more

Well that was a week we won't forget in a hurry. 3 crews to Kaikoura for a long evening/night shift on Tuesday then split between Hamner and Leader Rd yesterday. Our thoughts go out to those that lost their homes and suffered damage in Kaikoura. Even our veterans hadn't seen fire behavior like that.

Special shout out to the Kaikoura Volynteer Fire Brigade who were very welcoming and had made some incredible saves in what looked to have been insane conditions and to all the other brigades who dropped tools and headed to help.

⚠️A total ban on open fires and fireworks comes into force across the whole of Canterbury at noon today because of the gales, high temperatures and low humidity that are forecast for the next few days. This means no new fires at all, for any reason, and no fireworks. ⚠️
• We are asking every landowner, agricultural contractor, forestry manager and lifestyle block owner to help us avoid any more fires starting, or reigniting from previous burns.
• Anyone who has had an outdoor fire since the beginning of September is asked to go and check today that it is completely out. If you see any sign of heat or smoke, please act immediately to fully wet down the site. If this is not possible, call 111 so that firefighters can assist.

Yesterday’s fires showed the devastating effects that wildfires have on communities, putting lives at risk and causing significant damage. We are asking everyone to do their bit to make sure this doesn't happen anywhere else.

Training with Amuri Helicopters in Hanmer.

As part of our role we work as a 'Strike Team' for the Northern part of the Canterbury Fenz district. This can mean being dropped into an area with little more than handtools and a good dose of good intentions.

Sunday was a great chance for most of the crew to polish skills and a few to get their first go at climbing in and out of a hovering machine.

CAMP FIRE BY RIVER

01/03/2025

We have noticed some of the community Facebook groups out there running hot with concerns over smoke drifting across the plains in all different directions. We have a large number of permitted fires happening in our district today and tomorrow.

We are still in a Restricted fire season, meaning you must apply for a permit if you want to light a fire in the outdoors. It is very important that all permit holders READ the conditions on their permit as there will be conditions around lighting, monitoring and extinguishing but most importantly about notifying our Communications Centre before you light up.

If you see smoke and you are concerned about it please try to locate where the smoke is coming from before ringing 111. Smoke can drift for miles and our volunteer crews will often get sent out to investigate smoke that could be miles away. So to save our crews precious time, please try to locate the source first, that way you can also provide details about the size of the fire and type of fire so that we can send the right resources.

Let's be careful out there over the next few days.
