Realised I hadn’t actually talked about the concept and inspiration behind “6:00 pm” yet! So for those interested here is the artist statement about the work (and the irony of posting this on social media is not lost on me 😂):

Taking its form and inspiration from Australian painter John Bracks’ iconic 1955 painting, “Collins St. 5p.m”, 6:00 pm (a play on modern working hours increasing and a business district anywhere) provides a commentary on social media and the media in general. The use of newsprint as material, sourced from the same time period, connect and enhance the work thematically. Headlines left exposed and a 50’s selfie, pose questions for the viewer to interpret around the content of what we consume and are influenced by. Where Brack took care to personalise each figure despite the robotic depiction, 6:00 pm emphasises anonymity and considers the role confirmation bias and algorithms play to control and strip users of their individuality.

I’ve been mentoring Lisa for awhile now, working towards this exhibition Creative Arts Napier. So proud of how far she’s come and this amazing body of work she’s created. If you’re in Napier go check it out!
