“Off Air, On Memory” 1045mm x 1045mm, acrylic on canvas, just completed and for sale!
Very grateful to Property Brokers Ohakune for the use of their window 👏

From my Nostalgia Series, Off Air, On Memory captures a retro 80s television set holding the soft glow of the ABC test pattern and pixelated background — the image that greeted me when I woke early for cartoons.

I’ve included Goodnight Kiwi, a beloved New Zealand character who once turned off the nation’s broadcasts each night. He walks off the canvas here, a quiet farewell to a moment slipping out of collective memory.

Commissions welcome — I’m always fascinated by the objects and memories people carry with them.

Such an important part of an art practice - experiment and play. Follow your curiosity and see what happens! So much learning and discovery along the way.

Still working away on my nostalgia series, this one the turntable. This black needed to be a black with hints of purple and red to complement the other elements in the picture but also be cool in tone so as to recede behind them…Four colours have been mixed to make it….

This one’s coming along nicely. I’ve had it in mind for years, takes me back to childhood

Realised I hadn’t actually talked about the concept and inspiration behind “6:00 pm” yet! So for those interested here is the artist statement about the work (and the irony of posting this on social media is not lost on me 😂):

Taking its form and inspiration from Australian painter John Bracks’ iconic 1955 painting, “Collins St. 5p.m”, 6:00 pm (a play on modern working hours increasing and a business district anywhere) provides a commentary on social media and the media in general. The use of newsprint as material, sourced from the same time period, connect and enhance the work thematically. Headlines left exposed and a 50’s selfie, pose questions for the viewer to interpret around the content of what we consume and are influenced by. Where Brack took care to personalise each figure despite the robotic depiction, 6:00 pm emphasises anonymity and considers the role confirmation bias and algorithms play to control and strip users of their individuality.
