NZDA Kapiti Branch – Club Night

This Wednesday we will also have our regular club night with a range of updates and activities.

We’ll have updates on exciting progress at the range, and Andrew Henderson will provide an update on the latest firearm legislation.

We’ll also be running a Buy, Sell & Swap evening, so bring along any surplus gear and join in. It’s a great chance to catch up with fellow members over a cuppa and a yarn.

If you are bringing fi****ms or ammunition, please ensure they are transported safely and in accordance with legal requirements. Carry your FAL and follow all rules for transporting fi****ms.

This Wednesday, we take a moment as a club to remember and honour Bruce Davis, one of the founding members of the NZDA Kapiti Branch, who sadly passed away recently.

Bruce played an important role in the early foundations of our branch, and his contribution helped shape the club we are part of today.

We encourage all members who knew Bruce, or who value the history of our branch, to take a moment to reflect on his involvement and the legacy he leaves behind in the Kapiti hunting community.

At our club night, we will also be sharing memories and acknowledging the part Bruce played in establishing NZDA Kapiti.

We extend our thoughts to his family and friends at this time.

The 2026 National Wild Goat Hunting Competition kicks off this Saturday, 1 August, and runs through until 26 November.

Hunters can enter by bringing in a wild goat tail, with one tail equalling one entry. There are national and local prize categories for adults, juniors and landowners, including hunting gear, thermal monoculars, binoculars, vouchers, camping equipment and more.

The competition is a great opportunity to enjoy a hunt while helping reduce wild goat numbers and the damage they cause to native forests and farmland.

Remember to hunt legally, safely and humanely, gain permission before hunting on private land and always positively identify your target.

For full competition details and entry locations, visit:

Pictures from our June Range Day at the Wellington Branch range, held on 7 June.

Seven keen Kapiti members took part in two matches for the day: a .22 four-position match and a 200m prone supported shoot. It was a great opportunity to sharpen skills, enjoy some friendly competition, and spend time on the range together.

A big thank you to the Wellington Branch for generously allowing us to use their excellent range facilities. We really appreciate your support and hospitality.

July is almost over but June was another great month for the Kapiti Deerstalkers Branch, with two successful social events enjoyed by our members.

Our club night featured a visit to Das Bunker, an impressive private fi****ms and military memorabilia collection on the Kapiti Coast. Members enjoyed a fascinating tour of the extensive collection and the stories behind it. A big thank you to our hosts for a memorable evening. Das Bunker is open for booked visits, and we highly recommend it.

We also held our annual club dinner at The Jolly Pub & Kitchen, where members enjoyed a fantastic meal and great company. Many thanks to committee member Nick, head of Catering, for organising another successful evening.

It’s always great to see members coming together both in the field and socially, and we look forward to seeing everyone at our upcoming events.

From Steve

It’s May, the quad bike, rubber boat and fishing gear are loaded and strapped down, given the usual pat and told, “that’s not going anywhere.” Time for the nine-hour drive to Cape Runaway.

Mike and I joined Shane at Haywards House for our annual week of land-based game fishing, chasing snapper and kingfish off the rocks — a trip we’ve been doing together since the 90s. Shane, now 18 months on from two new knees, had missed last year and was raring to go.

The first few days were quiet, with a big north-east swell forcing us into sheltered bays. Plenty of fish were caught, but no big ones. By day four the swell had dropped enough to reach one of our favourite ledges, so a 4:30am start, a quad ride and a 40-minute tramp had us back where good fish have been landed before.

After Mike and Shane lost their live kahawai to tope sharks, I kept one kahawai in reserve while fishing a wrasse. Later in the day the wrasse was hit but missed, so the kahawai went out. Before long, a huge yellowtail was thrashing around it, the balloon disappeared and the reel started screaming.

After a hard fight from the rocks, with the fish finding w**d and reef and the line locking up on the bottom, I managed to free it, turn it and bring it to the surface. Mike made a great gaff shot in a small gutter, and the kingfish was landed.

Into the weigh sling it went — 28kg. After a few quick photos, it was released and swam away strongly.

My best fish in 15 years and third best ever. Over the trip Mike and Shane also landed kingfish up to 23kg, with Shane proving there’s plenty of life after new knees.

Another great club night with a good turn out. A big Welcome to all the new members. We all got a great demonstration of how to field prep your trophy heads in the field and how to give your taxidermist the best shot at giving you the best result.

A big thanks for the fantastic presentation from Tamas https://www.moonshinetaxidermy.co.nz/
