Coastguard Manawatū responds after boat capsizes at Tangimoana Beach

Two people have died and a third has been hospitalised after a boat capsized on the Rangitīkei River bar at Tangimoana Beach this morning.

Coastguard's National Operations Centre was notified of the capsize shortly after 8am, with three people reported in the water about 200 metres offshore, north of Himatangi. Volunteers from Coastguard Manawatū launched jet ski Blue Rescue and rescue vessel Kevin Morris II to assist.

Surf Life Saving Manawatū-Tararua also responded with two inflatable rescue boats. One person from the capsized boat made it to shore unassisted, a second person was found on the beach and the third was brought in by Coastguard volunteers. Hato Hone St John, Police, Fire and Emergency New Zealand and a rescue helicopter all attended. One patient was taken to Palmerston North Hospital in a moderate condition.

Police led the response and have confirmed two deaths, which are expected to be referred to the Coroner.

Our thoughts are with the family and friends of those who died, and with the person now recovering in hospital. Thank you to our Coastguard Manawatū volunteers, this has been a tragic morning for Tangimoana and the wider Manawatū community.

Lifejackets save lives - so there are huge smiles at Water Safety New Zealand this morning. 😀

We could not be happier to see the Lifejackets on Recreational Craft Amendment Bill pass its third reading in Parliament late last night. This is a national rule mandating lifejacket use on boats 6m and under in size while underway.

Thank you to everyone, in every part of the water safety community, past and present who has advocated for this change. And to all you legends who took the time to make a submission in October and April.

The bill was drawn from the ‘biscuit tin’ in April 2025 – about ten years after former MP Alfred Ngaro drove it forward. We acknowledge the work of the Transport and Infrastructure Select Committee in 2025 and 2026, Upper Harbour MP Cameron Brewer, and the Bill’s Sponsor Hon Dr Shane Reti.

In the past 25 years more than 330 people have drowned in a craft-related incident who were not wearing a lifejacket. A national, consistent rule is an incredible step for the safety of New Zealanders in the water. There’s no doubt this change will save lives.

So, what are the next steps?

The Bill needs to receive the Royal Assent, before it comes into effect 28 days later. It will be expected to come into force over the coming weeks, with the commencement date confirmed at Royal Assent.

The law will apply across New Zealand to people using recreational vessels such as
paddleboards, jet skis, dinghies, trailer sailors, and small motorboats while they are
underway.

As Dog says "Be A Legend, Always Wear a Lifejacket!"

Legends Live On.

(By chance - this makes Dog's limited edition print raising funds for water safety even more momentous, releasing the same week as this hugely significant change that will save lives, quite simply. Secure your slice of history! Link in bio)

🏆 A world-first for Coastguard! 🏆

Coastguard North Canterbury has become the first New Zealand organisation ever to receive a Higgins & Langley Memorial Award, the highest honour in swiftwater and flood rescue, presented annually in the United States.

The volunteer unit picked up the Team and Program Development Award, recognising years of dedication to building world-class swiftwater and flood rescue capability.

Until now, New Zealand recognition at this level has only ever gone to individual rescuers, never a whole organisation.

Two volunteers form the unit travelled all the way to Oklahoma City to accept the award, presented on 27 August at the Oklahoma Water Rescue Conference, one of the biggest gatherings of rescue professionals in the world.

Coastguard North Canterbury President Kevin Bryce says the honour belongs to everyone who has contributed: "This award reflects a collective effort spanning many years... it would not have been possible without the support of our local community."

Huge congratulations to the whole team. 👏
