Kia hiwa rā! Kia hiwa rā!
E ngā uri o Ngāti Mutunga, nau mai, whakauruuru mai.

The time has come for us as Ngāti Mutunga to regather, reconnect, and prepare together as we move toward the reopening of Urenui Pā, now set for Saturday 18 July 2026.

This is a historic moment in the life of our iwi. Reopening our pā calls us home - to come together as Ngāti Mutunga Iwi, to strengthen ourselves and ensure the mana, tikanga, and integrity of our pā are upheld with care and unity. This is a shared responsibility that sits with us all, and one that requires our collective whakaaro, presence, and commitment.

Now that the reopening date has been confirmed, we are readying ourselves together. We acknowledge that the timeframe leading into the first wānanga is short; however, we want to make the most of the time available so that we can prepare well and intentionally for what lies ahead.

In the lead‑up to the reopening, a series of wānanga will be held to support our iwi preparation. These wānanga are spaces for whānau to come together, align our whakaaro, reconnect with tikanga, and build confidence. They are also an opportunity for us to step into our collective responsibility - supporting one another, sharing knowledge, and ensuring we are ready as an iwi to carry this kaupapa with integrity.

Wānanga Tuatahi
Friday 8 May – Saturday 9 May 2026
Pukearuhe Marae
Pōwhiri: 5.00pm, Friday

This first wānanga will focus on paepae‑related kaupapa, including an overview of the tikanga for the reopening day. We will kōrero together about karakia, whaikōrero, karanga (overview), and waiata, laying a strong foundation for the wānanga that will follow as part of our collective preparation.

These gatherings are an important part of how we prepare ourselves as Ngāti Mutunga - strengthening our unity, uplifting one another, and ensuring the reopening of our pā is carried out with dignity, confidence, and care. Each of us has a role to play in upholding the mana of this occasion.

Accommodation is available. For catering purposes and to advise if you are staying overnight, please RSVP by emailing the office at [email protected]. Bring your own blankets and linen.

Whānau are welcome to attend part or all of the wānanga, and to come along to learn more about what will be happening in the lead‑up to the reopening of our marae.

Further details about upcoming wānanga in this preparation series will be shared in due course.

This is our time to come together as Ngāti Mutunga - to prepare, to support one another, and to honour this significant moment in our iwi history.

Following our marae hui whanau are encouraged to attend the Ngāti Mutunga o Wharekauri Iwi Trust ratification hui set down for Saturday 9 May at 4.00pm at the Urenui Community Centre, 13 Takiroa St, Urenui. This hui will provide an opportunity for uri to hear further information, ask questions, share whakaaro, and participate in this important decision‑making process about the proposed Ngati Mutunga o Wharekauri settlement offer prior to voting.

We look forward to seeing you all soon!
