Today the Government confirmed that the prohibition on Protective Earth and Neutral (PEN) and earth conductor switching will be restored, with the Electricity (Safety) Amendment Regulations 2026 coming into force on 2 October 2026.
This reverses changes made in late 2025 while further analysis and an independent expert review are undertaken. This outcome reflects the value of constructive industry advocacy.
Alongside the New Zealand Electrical Inspectors Association (NZEIA), Engineering New Zealand and other industry stakeholders, Master Electricians raised concerns about the potential safety risks associated with PEN switching and engaged directly with MBIE, WorkSafe Energy Safety and the Minister for Energy’s office.
As New Zealand continues to electrify, with increasing adoption of solar, battery storage and EV charging systems, it is critical that regulatory settings keep pace while maintaining public and worker safety. Clear, practical and trusted standards give contractors confidence and help protect the communities they serve.
We appreciate the willingness of Government agencies to engage with industry perspectives and listen to the concerns raised across the sector. This decision demonstrates what can be achieved when industry speaks with one voice and supports its position with evidence.
