The weather today will increase in severity. Which may bring issues. We are working with various authorities as needed and will keep our centre access limited to FENZ relocations unless. We are expecting further updates at 1pm so will confirm any changes soon after.

A dedicated team of Waikato District Council and Civil Defence staff have been implementing a district wide plan to develop Community Response Groups. Tuakau was one of the early members of this programme.

For the first time in public Tuakau Community Response Group (TCRG) is activating as per guidance from Civil Defence, Regional and District councils in response to Cyclone Vaianu.

As a reminder, you are involved in a medical emergency or life in is in danger, please ring 111 now.

For power related issues in the Tuakau area please call Counties Energy (0800 100 102).

We have response plans in place for a variety of emergencies and work to help our community stay prepared, capable, and resilient wherever possible.

Our teams aim is to provide information and welfare support to the community during emergencies. During an event we will help to set up centre(s) where people can come for support, and depending on the scale of the emergency, we can provide a place to come for information, get a hot drink, something to eat, charge phones, get warm.

We will let you know where to go and when they are open to see you as the need is identified.

We appreciate all of our members and those giving their time and support in such trying times. Remember to be kind to all involved.

Check back here for more information as released about local TUAKAU based efforts and guidance.

Keep informed and keep safe

Waikato District Council have requested the following detail be provided to those in our area.

--snip--

We’re continuing to monitor Cyclone Vaianu as it moves closer to New Zealand, expecting to make landfall within our region on Sunday.

Heavy rain and strong winds may cause:

• Flash flooding and rapidly rising water

• Landslides and falling trees

• Dangerous driving conditions and road closures

• Power outages

A significant wave event, associated with Vaianu, is also likely to cause moderate to significant coastal erosion impacts for parts of the region around the Eastern Coromandel Peninsula and the Firth of Thames. Use caution and try to avoid the beaches during Saturday and Sunday.

Leading up to this, Severe Weather Warnings and Watches have also been issued by MetService New Zealand across the North Island and will be updated for the areas expecting severe gales and heavy rain from Saturday evening to Monday.

If you haven’t already, now’s a good time to take a few simple steps around home to get ready for wet and windy weather https://getready.govt.nz/ including getting farm animals situated Waikato Rural Support Trust

LANSLIDE RISK ADVICE:

Heavy rain from Cyclone Vaianu may increase the risk of landslides across our region.

Landslides can happen suddenly during and even after heavy rain, especially in steep areas, around banks, cliffs, and roadside cuttings.

If you can, avoid unnecessary travel in these areas over the next few days.

⚠️ Watch for warning signs, you may need to act quickly:
• Small slips, rock falls, or sinking ground at the base of slopes
• Doors or windows sticking or not closing properly
• Gaps appearing around window or door frames
• Decks, steps or verandas tilting or pulling away from buildings
• New cracks or bulges in the ground, roads, paths, or retaining walls
• Trees, fences, or retaining walls starting to lean

🚨 If you notice these signs, move away immediately.
Evacuate if you think your home or building could be at risk.

Heavy rain can continue to affect land stability even after it eases, so stay alert.
