He Maimai Aroha

Tū ana i a Rangiahua, e tangi.
Ko Kapuarangi e rū, e auē ana.
Ko Wainui e rere nei. E kī ana i te roimata.
Ka pari te moana.
Ka karanga mai. ‘Kua riro, ā, kua riro’
Ngāi Tai iwi e tangi, e whati.
Kua hinga te pou. Kua motu te taura.
Whenua. Wai. Tangata.
Kotahi te tangi. Ka tau te mamae.
E te rātā whakamarumaru, takoto, takoto, e moe.

Ngāitai Iwi Authority acknowledges with deep sadness the passing of Ian Ruru, a respected uri of Ngāi Tai whose life's work has left an enduring legacy for our iwi, te taiao, and future generations.

For more than two decades, Ian served as a Director of Te Kumukumu Ltd, contributing his wisdom, leadership, and unwavering commitment to the aspirations of Ngāi Tai. He worked alongside our people to protect our awa, generously shared his knowledge, and strengthened our understanding of kaitiakitanga and our responsibilities as guardians of te taiao.

Ian was recognised nationally and internationally as a pioneering leader in Māori environmental science. Through his groundbreaking work with Mauri Compass, he helped reshape how environmental wellbeing is understood, demonstrating that the health of our wai, our whenua, and our people are inseparable. His vision challenged conventional approaches to environmental management and helped elevate the role of mātauranga Māori in decision-making across Aotearoa and beyond.

Despite his many achievements, Ian remained committed to empowering others. He believed knowledge should be shared, not held. He inspired people to reconnect with their environments, their whakapapa, and their responsibilities as kaitiaki. Whether working alongside whānau, supporting environmental restoration, or encouraging young people to become future guardians of te taiao, Ian led with humility, generosity, and purpose.

For Ngāi Tai, Ian's legacy is reflected not only in his professional achievements, but in the relationships he built, the knowledge he shared, and the care he showed for our people and the environment. His contribution has helped lay a stronger foundation for future generations to continue the work of protecting and restoring the taonga entrusted to us. His legacy will continue to flow through the awa he helped protect, the people he inspired, and the generations of kaitiaki who will follow in his footsteps.

On behalf of Ngāitai Iwi Authority, we extend our deepest aroha and heartfelt condolences to Ian's beloved wife, son’s, whānau, friends, colleagues, and all those whose lives were touched by his wisdom and generosity.

Thank you, Ian, for your leadership, service and lifelong commitment to Ngāi Tai, to te taiao, and to Aotearoa.

E te rangatira, ka kore mātou e wareware I a koe. E moe.

186 years ago today, on 11 June 1840, our Ngāi Tai Rangatira Pūtiki, Te Rangihuatake and Taku signed Te Tiriti o Waitangi.

Today we remember their leadership, their vision for our people, and the significance of the decisions made on behalf of future generations.

As we reflect on this important day in our history, we honour those who came before us and the enduring relationship between Ngāi Tai and the crown.

186 years on, we continue to uphold the legacy of our tīpuna and carry their aspirations forward for generations to come! 🌱✨

A powerful and historic day held for the Waitangi Tribunal hearing at Torere Marae for the Wai 1750 🌿

Ngā mihi nui to our iwi, kaumātua, whānau, and the waitangi tribunal commisioners who travelled to stand alongside us for this significant moment in our history. The kōrero shared throughout the day carried strength, truth, and vision for the generations to come.

From the warmth of the marae to the beautiful kai and meaningful discussions, it was a reminder of the resilience of our people and the importance of continuing this journey together.

As we move forward with the Wai 1750 and the participation of Wai 78 in those proceedings, we do so with hope, unity, and commitment to our future!

Ngā mihi nui e te iwi 👏💪🏼

We Need Your Feedback!!

Tena koutou katoa e ngā uri o Ngai Tai,
Following our latest hui a iwi (10th May), we are now inviting all Ngai Tai whanau to provide feedback on the proposed Post Settlement Governance Entity (PSGE).

This entity will be responsible for receiving and managing settlement assets on behalf of Ngai Tai, so it is important that it reflects the values and expectations of our people.

We are seeking our second round of feedback on two key areas:
Dispute Resolution & Remaining Provisions - how we resolve disputes
Trust Deed Review - when and how should the Trust Deed be reviewed
We have created a second short online form to make it easy to share your whakaaro. This should take no more than 10 -15 minutes to complete.

👉 Provide your feedback here: https://forms.cloud.microsoft/r/X6CLQzLy31

All feedback will be collated and provided to our legal advisors to help inform the development of the PSGE.
Please share with your whanau far and wide so we can hear as many Ngai Tai voices as possible.

Mā Ngai Tai Mō Ngai Tai E Ai Kia Ngai Tai 🌿✨

📜 Did you know?

In the early 1930s, Ngai Tai were under heavy financial pressure due to Crown survey liens and local council rates placed over their whenua at Tōrere.

By August 1930, the total debt exceeded £3,000. Although the Crown later wrote off a significant portion, Ngai Tai were still left owing £870. To clear this debt, Ngai Tai made the difficult decision to alienate three blocks of Tōrere land.

In 1931, the Native Land Court vested these blocks in the Crown.
By 1937, after land consolidation, they became Tōrere 63, covering 5,359 acres.

In 1976, the land was set aside as State Forest Land, and by 1979, it was formally classified as a State Forest Park.

🌱 This story reflects how financial mechanisms and legislation led to the permanent loss of Ngai Tai whenua, land that once sustained generations becoming Crown forest land within a few decades.

Ko te whenua te oranga o te iwi.
