Mother’s Day doesn’t stop the pager going off.

Which means across the country today, there’ll be mums leaving half-finished coffees, cold toast, family lunches and kids’ cuddles to answer a call for help from someone else.

Volunteer firefighting asks a lot from families. Especially the ones at home holding everything together while we head out the door.

So today’s not just about the mums on the truck.
It’s also about the mums, wives, partners and grandmothers behind the scenes who quietly make this job possible in the first place.

Thanks for the support, the patience, and the understanding when the siren interrupts another family moment.

Happy Mother’s Day from all of us at Laingholm Volunteer Fire Brigade.

The red warning for Wairarapa has been updated to an orange warning in place until 9pm. We are still likely to see surface flooding and poor conditions during the day.

🚧 Report Damage - If there is damage or flooding in your area, you can report it by calling the Council on 06 370 6300, or by lodging a report through the Antenno app. If someone is in danger, call 111 immediately.

Our crews will be out assessing roads and weather impacts throughout the day. This will take some time, so we appreciate your patience. Please avoid unnecessary travel. If travel is essential, drive to the conditions, be prepared to stop, and stay up to date with Metlink for any changes to public transport services.

UPDATE - 9.15PM - Monday 20 April

An EMA has been issued in Wairarapa due to heavy rain flows causing rivers to rise rapidly.

If you live in low lying areas, coastal settlements, or areas prone to flooding, take extra precautions and be prepared to evacuate quickly if you see signs of potential flooding.

- Consider evacuating now.
- If you see rising flood water evacuate immediately to higher ground. DO NOT WAIT for an official warning.
- If you need to evacuate, seek shelter with friends and family if you can. Take pets and essential items.
- Call 111 if your life or property is at risk. Emergency services could be delayed.

Firefighters responded to 12 incidents resulting from Cyclone Vaianu overnight. Most of them related to the winds, with fallen trees affecting property and roofs lifting.

Enhanced rescue teams are on standby in Whangarei, Auckland, Rotorua, Tairawhiti, and Coromandel to support local brigades.

Fire and Emergency’s National Coordination Centre is activated, along with our Region Coordination Centres in Auckland and Tauranga.

Yesterday crews helped Civil Defence and Police with precautionary evacuations from coastal areas in Northland and Bay of Plenty.

Just a quick post to make you aware we are quietly, yet very actively preparing for what Cyclone Vaianu may throw at us, our families and our community. We have done extra training as a brigade and a few members have incidentally just completed a specialised training course on Emergency Management Systems (CIMS) today.

Extensive inter-agency emergency management efforts are currently underway. We have established and will maintain communication with relevant agencies throughout this event.

Our recommendations to you are:
* Get prepared
* Keep informed
* Make timely choices
* If there is risk to life or safety, call 111
