Apologies for this late post... Our first club night was held last Friday at Martin's Field.

The evening started off with temperatures reaching 22 degrees.... until just after 5pm then a southerly came through... very fresh but we were thankful not to get wet.

We had a good turnout with a total of 35 athletes competing with 25 completing the 800m to finish - not too bad!

We kicked off with the 100m sprint. We had 2 four star performances (Blake Webber and Annabel Shearer) and 3 three star performances (Nate Holden, Eli Bird and Tobiah Bird). The Colgate five star performances are something that we have continued on over the years for athletes aged 7 - 14 years and means you can compare across ages with a five star being the highest achievement. We'll typically note performances at and above three star performances. Blake Webber was fastest male and Emma Becroft was fastest female.

The shotput resulted in one four star performance (Nate Holden) and four three star performances (Eli Bird, Blake Webber, Esther Robinson and Jaana Bird). Longest male shotput was by Josh Craig and longest female shotput was by Emma Becroft. Great to see adults giving shotput a go.

The long jump is always a challenge off soft grass. We had 3 three star performances (Eli Bird, Tobiah Bird and Blake Webber). Longest male jump was by Blake Webber and longest female jump was by Emma Becroft.

The 800m seemed a daunting task for our athletes especially early in the season but it didn't deter the majority of athletes. We saw 1 four star performance (by Eli Bird missing five star by 1 second). Notable performances by our 8 and 9 year old boys who recorded two star performances which only start getting measured at 10 years old (Nate Holden, Austin Heffernan, Finley Clarke and Harrison Shearer). Fastest male was Eli Bird and fastest female was Annabel Shearer. The closest finish was between Monique Bird and Kathryn Robinson who were neck and neck over the two laps and were a dead heat at the finish line.

Full results can be found on our website here (https://www.scathleticsclub.co.nz/results.html)

Thank you to all of our volunteers. We were thankful to have Adrienne Bruce and Penny Dewar supporting as volunteers. They both brought a wealth of knowledge on how to run events. And those parents who helped - a big thank you as we can't do it without you.

What a day at the South Island Masters Games!

Today we had two of our senior SCAAC members competing at the South Island Masters Games, with another four of our club members there helping to make the day happen - including three of our Life Members officiating across many of the events.

It was an awesome sunny day with an even better atmosphere. The Masters Games really showed what athletics is all about - competitors of all ages getting out there, giving it their best, chasing PBs and, just as importantly, encouraging and supporting each other along the way.

There was a fantastic range of age groups taking part, proving that there really is no age limit to running, jumping and throwing! One competitor was an incredible 89 years young and still out there challenging himself - absolutely awesome to see!

A huge congratulations to everyone who competed, officiated and volunteered today. It was a great reminder of the incredible athletics community we’re lucky to be part of.

Keep chasing those PBs, whatever your age!
