Sport Canterbury - South Canterbury

Sport Canterbury - South Canterbury As one of New Zealand’s 17 Regional Sports Trusts, our vision is “more people more active more often.” We continue to grow our hapori.

In 1989, Sport Canterbury was established as the Regional Sports Trust for the Waitaha Te Tai Poutini regions. The role of sport is to provide people of all ages with a sense of community and connection. For that reason, for over 30 years we have been committed to empowering coaches, clubs and sports. We know the value that sport, play, physical activity and recreation have in building better comm

unities - helping people feel good about themselves. Sport Canterbury is also the home of Healthy Families Ōtautahi, Healthy Active Learning, Community Strength and Balance and Workplace First Aid, collaborating with partners in health and education to improve outcomes for the wellbeing of our whānau.

💙 Volunteer Week 💙
A big shoutout to Lucy and Luke for all you do supporting Netball South Canterbury. Your commitment to give up your time each week helps to make the game possible. Give these two a high five on Wednesday or Thursday night if you see them at the stadium to thank them for all they do 🙂

Volunteer Spotlight 💚

For Volunteer Week, we’re taking another moment to recognise Joy Edmond, The Breeze Volunteer of the Year at the 2026 Trust Aoraki South Canterbury Sports and Recreation Awards.

Joy has played a central role in the Temuka Squash Club as Secretary and Treasurer, supporting governance, member communication, and event coordination. She also helped deliver the club’s 50th Jubilee celebrations and contributed to hosting an international PSA squash event.

A standout contribution to the growth and success of squash in South Canterbury 🙌

Connection at Ōnuku Marae 🌿

Sport Canterbury kaimahi recently gathered for a two-day noho grounded in whanaungatanga, reflection, and shared learning.

At the edge of Ōnuku Bay, our mauri stone was named Tūhono, meaning to connect, to join, to unite, as waters from across our region were poured over it in a blessing.

Alongside this, we shared our new waiata for the first time, a piece that reflects the people, places, and communities that shape our rohe.

Discover the story behind Tūhono and our waiata in the full article ⬇️

✅ Planning to apply for Tū Manawa Active Aotearoa? Start gathering youth voice now.

Applications must show evidence that tamariki and rangatahi want the opportunity, for example, a short survey summary, photos of a brainstorm, or a quick video kōrero.

This part matters because it shows your activity fits what young people actually want and need.

Out and about this month 📸

Our team was at the Year 11 Pathways Expo, sharing how a passion for sport can connect to real-world pathways and careers, along with the work that supports sport and physical activity across our region 🏃‍♀️🏃‍♂️

We also joined the Ageing Expo, having great conversations about staying active in ways that feel doable. We shared information on Green Prescription, Strength and Balance, and Falls Prevention, along with practical ideas for feeling stronger and more confident day to day 💬💪

Thanks to everyone who stopped by to say hello! 🤝
