Sport Canterbury - South Canterbury In 1989, Sport Canterbury was established as the Regional Sports Trust for the Waitaha Te Tai Poutini regions. We continue to grow our hapori.

Sport Canterbury, established in 1989 as the Regional Sports Trust for Waitaha Canterbury/Te Tai Poutini West Coast, is dedicated to fostering community and connection through play, active recreation and sport. The role of sport is to provide people of all ages with a sense of community and connection. For that reason, for over 30 years we have been committed to empowering coaches, clubs and sports. We know the value that sport, play, physical activity and recreation have in building better communities - helping people feel good about themselves. Sport Canterbury is also the home of Healthy Families Ōtautahi, Healthy Active Learning, Community Strength and Balance and Workplace First Aid, collaborating with partners in health and education to improve outcomes for the wellbeing of our whānau.

Our 16-member Aoraki Team and mascot Rhinoceros, are heading to Christchurch this weekend for the Halberg Games South!

🏆 Term 3 Wrap-Up | Aoraki Secondary School Sport

Another busy and successful term celebrating student participation, achievement, and connection across our region!

Events included: 🏐 Netball Champs,🏸 Badminton Champs,🏀 Special Olympics Basketball,🎯 Clay Target Shooting🏓 Table Tennis Champs🌺 Oamaru Fiefia Celebration

Our Sport Coordinators (Aoraki Tigers) also joined sport leaders from around New Zealand at the National Secondary Schools Sport Coordinators Conference in Wellington to share ideas and strengthen opportunities for school sport.

A huge thank you to all who contributed to another fantastic term especially, athletes, school staff, coaches, officials, volunteers, and supporters 👏

🌏✨ Today marked the first Te Hui Ahurea o Te Umu Kaha - a wonderful celebration of the many cultures that make up the rangatahi and tamariki of Temuka's schools.
A huge congratulations to all the students who proudly shared their cultures through performances ranging from kapa haka to Highland dancing. It was a truly special day that brought the community together and celebrated the diversity that makes this community so strong.
We had plenty of fun at lunchtime sharing Māori kēmu (games). Well done to Harper (Year 4, St Joseph's Catholic School) and Flynn (Opihi College), who showed outstanding skills in the kēmu space!
One of the most memorable moments of the day was seeing students from Opihi College Wi******er Rural School St Joseph's School, Temuka Temuka Primary School and Arowhenua Māori School come together to close the event with a powerful combined waiata and haka.
Sport Canterbury was proud to be part of such a special day, sharing in the celebration of culture, connection, and community, and supporting opportunities that bring tamariki and rangatahi together.

Today we farewell Caelyn, our Gateway student from Roncalli College, who has been with us throughout Terms 2 and 3.

It has been a pleasure having Caelyn as part of our team, and we thank her for all she has contributed during her placement.

As she heads into her final term as a Year 13 student, we wish her every success in her future endeavors and look forward to seeing where her next chapter takes her.

Only took these two 7 takes to get to this stage!! We are excited to be a part of the festivities on the weekend. We will be there with our play equipment and a Keep it Positive colouring in competition so come along and embrace Cultural Round and support the Gotchu initiative and the all the South Canterbury teams on display!!

Community sport brings tamariki, rangatahi, whānau, coaches and volunteers together every day. To celebrate today's Te Reo i te Hapori (In the Community) theme, we're sharing some of our Keep It Positive messages in te reo Māori. ❤️

Positive sideline behaviour can have a big impact on how tamariki and rangatahi experience sport and recreation. These reminders encourage respect, encouragement and support for everyone involved.

Well done to all our South Canterbury Schools who took to the stage for FLAVA festival 2026 to open the celebrations for Māori Language Week. Physical activity, play, & sport are such important kaupapa for our rakatahi to feel connected and confident and we loved seeing you all shine!
