🌿 Get involved in Secondhand September! 🌿
We’re getting behind Secondhand September this year and creating a community events calendar — and we’d love YOU to be part of it!

We’re already planning:
👗 An Eco Talk on Fast Fashion
🔧 A Repair Café to help fix items instead of replacing them

Now we’re inviting local groups, businesses, and individuals to join in.

💡 How could you contribute?
You could:
Host a workshop or skill-share (sewing, mending, upcycling, DIY)
Run a talk or panel discussion
Organise a secondhand sale, swap event, or market stall
Offer a behind-the-scenes tour of sustainable practices
Run a clothing repair or alteration pop-up
Host a film night or book club on sustainability themes
Share a school or community project showcase
Create a challenge or competition (best upcycle, thrifted outfit, etc.)
Offer discounts or specials on secondhand items

📅 Let’s fill September with inspiring, practical ways to reduce waste and rethink what we buy!

June Repair Café – Another community effort!

A huge thank you to everyone who came along to our June Repair Café, especially our incredible volunteers who made the day possible!

Together we achieved:

⭐ 12 amazing helpers
⭐ 26 volunteer hours
⭐ 53 visitors
⭐ 27 items brought in for repair

Only three items were truly at the end of their life. Their owners left with good advice before sending it to landfill. Every other item was either repaired on the day or people were given advice on how to get it repaired. See our 2026 stats graphic in the post!

This month's repairs included bikes, clothing, heaters, a phone, a 60 - 100-year-old collection bag, an early 1900s box, and many other treasured items.

As we celebrate National Volunteer Week, we want to give a special shout-out to our Repair Café volunteers. You help make a real difference in our community.Thank you - Nigel, Paul, Liz, Ivan, Anne, Sara, Monica, Nelska, Raewyn, Kevin and John (plus his grandson Anton).

Interested in joining the team? We would love to hear from you!

We're always looking for repairers, but we also need volunteer hosts. With our Repair Café growing busier each month, it now takes at least three people to help host the event. If you enjoy connecting with people, making cuppas, welcoming visitors, collecting details, and helping everyone feel comfortable, we'd love to have you on board.

🔌 We would also love to hear from any electricians or people with electrical repair experience. Small electrical items are one of our common repairs, and currently we only have one electrical repair volunteer who is kept very busy. Having another pair of skilled hands would make a huge difference!

📞 Get in touch with the South Canterbury Eco Centre to find out more about volunteering at our Repair Café. You don't have to be available every month! Together, we can help keep valuable items out of landfill and build a more connected community.

Happy National Volunteer Week! 🎉

We love any excuse to bake scones at the Eco Centre and celebrate the incredible people who give their time, skills, and energy to support us.

From our trustees, gardeners, handy-men, repairers, and vision-makers, to all the many other roles our volunteers take on, you help make the Eco Centre what it is. We couldn't do it without you!

A huge thank you to everyone who was able to join us for morning tea today, and to those who couldn't make it, we'll catch up with you another time.

We appreciate every single one of you,
From Alice, Chris, Briony, Corrie, Sara, Jen and the team.

Just wow! We had another record turn out for the Repair Cafe!

We are incredibly grateful to our volunteers whose repair skills blow us away each month!

We are also grateful to the hosting volunteers ... we have worked out now we are so popular it takes at least 3 people, that aren't repairing, to keep things running smoothly.

More photos and stats to come. In the meantime here is a precious box which hinges were blown apart. Kevin did an amazing job at fixing it for the very grateful visitor.

Lots of amazing offerings at our Repair Cafe on Sunday 🤩Thanks to the volunteers.
