On Saturday 19 September, Te Whāriki Manawāhine o Hauraki (Te Whāriki) held a Survivor Whānau Day at its premises in Thames for whānau impacted by abuse in state and faith-based care.

A team of Hauraki Māori healers set up a clinic at Te Whāriki's whānau centre offering mirimiri throughout the day. Rongoa had been prepared in advance and gift-bagged for whānau to take home. Rāranga ran alongside kuia weavers, who worked with whānau to make taonga honouring those who have passed and those living with the fallout of what was done to them and their whānau in institutional care. The event was catered by local people alongside kai cooked by Te Whāriki kaimahi and described by attendees as "a hug in a bowl." Native trees were set out for anyone who wanted to take one home and plant in remembrance of loved ones. Gentle music played in the background across the day, and whānau moved through the space at their own pace; arriving, staying, sharing time with one another, and leaving when they were ready.

The clinic's healers commented afterwards that "it was a full day with a steady stream of people coming through the door." There were whānau already known to the local survivor community and others presenting for the first time. One newcomer, who had found the event through social media, said, "I saw the flyer on social media and thought I would brave it. I've had the most beautiful day." Survivor advocate Toni Rei Jarvis also joined the weekend's events, travelling to Thames in his touring bus to be with whānau.

Survivor Whānau Day | Thames

It is a space for Hauraki survivors of abuse in state and faith-based care and their whānau to connect, kōrero, share kai, mirimiri, rāranga, and spend time together.
This kaupapa began last year with the initial hui of the 'Hauraki Survivor Hub' and friends. It is also connected to the gifting of survivor pūrākau to Te Whāriki Manawāhine O Hauraki, where these stories are held and used in different ways to inform and educate our communities about survivors’ journeys and the impacts of institutional abuse across their wider whānau.
