Moehau Environment Group (MEG) is a not-for-profit community organisation driving conservation action through education, predator control, and monitoring across public conservation land and private land in in the Northern Coromandel.

On Sunday 5 July, 5pm, MEG Operations Manager, Paul Johnson, will share how MEG started to build a new possum control network, their learnings, and their hopes for the recovery of possum damaged coastal forests.

Join MEG for a night of sharing experiences and knowledge at the Pepper Tree Restaurant.

Paul says, "In 2023 Moehau Environment Group switched to using AT220 automatic self-resetting traps from NZAutoTraps for possum control. We've been fascinated with the multi species, self-resetting traps since their first early prototypes 8+ years ago. This is the story of the dramatic change we found after installing a network of 190 traps in a fenceless sanctuary in Tangiaro/Port Charles (MEGa Pest Attack)."

"The results were so encouraging; we set up a new project protecting the damaged pōhutukawa coastal forests around Waikawau. Now 160 traps are placed along these coasts, and we have three years of data and camera monitoring to show how effective they have been at sustained possum control."

"MEG are linking with other community groups like Habitat Tuateawa and local landowners to extend this trapping project. Come see what we have been doing to protect Coromandel pōhutukawa, coastal forests and wildlife!", says Paul.

👋Meet a Ranger Monday! This week meet Riley, Community & Visitor Centre Ranger, Hauraki

🌿What does your day-to-day Mahi involve?

My day-to-day mahi is mostly office-based, where I support planning and coordination, with a current focus on Matariki projects and building connections with iwi, community groups and school groups. I also spend time at the visitor centre throughout the week, helping with public enquiries and engaging with visitors. Alongside this, I’m part of the Hauraki social media team, where I contribute photos and information to help share what’s happening across the rohe. It’s a varied role that keeps me connected to both the community and our wider kaupapa.

🪻What do you enjoy about working for Te Papa Atawhai?

Growing up in Thames I spent (and still spend) a lot of time outdoors. My main hobbies include swimming up the Kauaeranga Valley, Fishing at the local beaches and Camping around the peninsula. This job really pushes me into the heart of supporting the communities that are also involved in these activities. I love the community aspect of my role and encouraging people to get out and see everything the Coromandel has to offer.

I also enjoy the opportunity to share the Kauaeranga Valley and the Coromandel via social media through the lens of a camera. Photography is a small hobby of mine and getting to do it as a job is awesome!

🏕 What has been a defining moment in your role at DOC?

Having only been here a couple of months, I was stoked to get the opportunity to take a helicopter ride through the valley to the pinnacles hut. From there I was able to walk to the summit, get awesome social media shots and enjoy all the spectacular views from up there and from the heli!

🌿 Billygoat Landing, Kauaeranga Valley Walk Series

Chasing big views without the big hike? This easy 20‑minute detour delivers. Wander along the Kauri Track, cross the awesome suspension bridge, then climb a short set of steeper steps to reach the landing. From the top, take in epic views of Billygoat Falls (180 m) and the historic Billygoat Incline. A great little side trip, especially if you’re on your way to the Pinnacles.
⛔ No dogs.

Our Heritage and Visitor rangers have been hard at work on the Pinnacles Track in the Kauaeranga Valley 💪

From flying in materials to spreading gravel by hand, it’s all about improving the track surface, managing drainage, and keeping it safe and enjoyable for everyone who heads up to the hut or summit.

A big effort behind the scenes to help protect the track and make your next visit a better one ⛏️🪨

👋Meet a ranger Monday!

This week meet Rebecca, Biodiversity Ranger Hauraki🌱

What do you enjoy about your role?⛰

Something I enjoy about my role at DOC is the ability to get outside in the bush or the wetlands and learn new knowledge from my colleagues around me. I also love being able to share my passion of nature with those outside of my work place; those who haven't grown up experiencing what nature has to offer or learnt the value of caring for nature around us every day. If we look after nature, nature will look after us :)

What inspired you to work for Te Papa Atawhai? And what is one thing you wish for more people to understand.🏕

My love for precious Aotearoa species and recreating in nature is what inspired me to work for Te Papa Atawhai, DOC. I love a solid climb up a tramping trail to a hut, in the bush where I can switch off from timeframes, go to bed when the sun goes down, wake up when the sun rises and test my comforts. I wish that more people would take the next step to get more connected to nature, to choose adventure outside and switch off from routine when you can, your overall Hauora/health will thank you for it.

Come see us at the Thames DOC office if you ever need some encouragement, or the Visitor Centre up the Kauaeranga Valley (Te Waiwhakaurunga) :)

What does your mahi involve day to day?🍀

On a regular basis my mahi includes, trapping our introduced pest's species (Possums, Stoats, Weasels, Ferrets, Rats, Mice and Hedgehogs). We also are constantly managing pest such as Privet, Japanese honeysuckle, Gorse, Woolly nightshade, Wild Ginger, wasps and Cascuta (Cascuta/ Yellow dotter is a nasty pest plant species toxic to livestock, it grows rapidly and is a parasitic plant that prefers hosting on dicot species such as Inkweed. Anyone can watch out for it and report it if spotted). Other projects include Bittern surveying with recorders, responding to native taonga that appear injured or stranded, sowing/monitoring Dactylanthus ; a mixed bag of experiences.

🌟 Call for Stallholders – Matariki Night Market July 4th 2026🌙

We are seeking local stallholders for our upcoming Matariki Night Market at the Kauaeranga Visitor Centre.

We want to welcome a wide range of locally made goods, crafts, and kai. If you create, grow, or prepare something locally, we’d love to hear from you!!
From handmade products to food stalls and everything in between.

With an already highly anticipated community event, we’re excited to showcase the creativity, skills, and talent that make our local community so special. This is a chance to celebrate what our people can create, share, and bring together.

This event celebrates Matariki as a time of whānau, sharing, and community connection, bringing people together to enjoy local talent, creativity, and kai in a relaxed evening setting!

If you’re keen to be part of the event, please get in touch.
