𝗧𝗲𝗰𝗵𝗻𝗼𝗹𝗼𝗴𝘆, 𝗖𝗼𝗺𝗺𝘂𝗻𝗶𝗰𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 & 𝗖𝗼𝗺𝗺𝘂𝗻𝗶𝘁𝘆!

Technology has come a long way—and so has the way we communicate! At our last Thames Toastmasters meeting, we explored how technology has advanced over time, how much we rely on it, and the many ways it has become part of our everyday lives.

But one thing technology can’t do for us is replace the value of good communication. Being able to speak clearly, confidently and get your message across is a skill that can benefit us at work, at home and in the wider community.

Our small, friendly club is a great place to practise, learn and build confidence in a supportive environment. Whether you’re an experienced speaker or someone who would simply like to feel more comfortable speaking in front of others, you’re very welcome to come along and see what we do.

📅 Thursday 27 August at 7.00pm
📍 St James Church Hall, Pahau Street, Thames

Come along, meet us and discover what Toastmasters could do for you! If you'd prefer to join us online, we'll send you a link.

𝗪𝗵𝗮𝘁 𝗵𝗮𝗽𝗽𝗲𝗻𝘀 𝗮𝘁 𝗮 𝗧𝗵𝗮𝗺𝗲𝘀 𝗧𝗼𝗮𝘀𝘁𝗺𝗮𝘀𝘁𝗲𝗿𝘀 𝗺𝗲𝗲𝘁𝗶𝗻𝗴?
A Toastmasters meeting is a fun, supportive gathering of about a dozen people who come together twice a month for just over an hour to grow their confidence and communication skills. Each meeting gives members an opportunity to enhance their public speaking skills by:

🔵 𝗚𝗶𝘃𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗶𝗺𝗽𝗿𝗼𝗺𝗽𝘁𝘂 𝘀𝗽𝗲𝗲𝗰𝗵𝗲𝘀: Members present two-minute impromptu speeches on assigned topics.

🔵 𝗣𝗿𝗲𝘀𝗲𝗻𝘁𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗽𝗿𝗲𝗽𝗮𝗿𝗲𝗱 𝘀𝗽𝗲𝗲𝗰𝗵𝗲𝘀: A member presents a speech based on projects from the Toastmasters Pathways education programme. Projects cover topics such as speech organisation, voice, language, gestures and persuasion.

🔵 𝗣𝗿𝗲𝘀𝗲𝗻𝘁𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗶𝗻 𝗼𝘁𝗵𝗲𝗿 𝗺𝗲𝗲𝘁𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗿𝗼𝗹𝗲𝘀: There are many other roles at a meeting to ensure every member has a speaking opportunity at each meeting.

🔵 𝗢𝗳𝗳𝗲𝗿𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗰𝗼𝗻𝘀𝘁𝗿𝘂𝗰𝘁𝗶𝘃𝗲 𝗲𝘃𝗮𝗹𝘂𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻: Every speaker is assigned an evaluator who highlights the speaker's strengths and offers suggestions for improvement.

Toastmasters was the vision of Ralph Smedley, who founded the first club in California, USA. While working for the Santa Ana YMCA, Smedley observed that many young men struggled with communication and felt that providing a place to practice speaking would help improve their confidence. The first meeting was held on 22 October 1924 and it was a huge success! Clubs were quickly founded in nearby towns and, by 1930, Toastmasters had become an international organisation.

Thames Toastmasters Club was originally formed in 1971. If you’d like to find out more about our group and the art of public speaking and communication, details of our next meeting are as follows:

Thursday 28 May
