Kia ora e te whānau,

We just want to take a moment to acknowledge and thank everyone who has been working tirelessly to clear our roads and restore essential services. Your efforts do not go unnoticed — we appreciate you all.

While many households now have power restored, we know there are still some areas doing it tough without it. Please check in on each other where you can.

We also know many of you are still clearing trees and debris from your own properties. If you need a hand, don’t hesitate to reach out — you don’t have to do it alone.

If you or someone you know needs help, contact your hapū CDEM — they can connect you with the right people and resources.

🌿 POST-CYCLONE UPDATE 🌿
Kia ora e te whānau,
We’ve had a tough day, but we’re back up on comms now 🙌
Power is still out, but crews are working hard to restore it, and essential services are underway again.
Our roads are starting to be cleared — thank you to everyone out there doing the mahi to get us moving again 💪
⚠️ Please stay safe as we clean up
There’s still a lot of risk around while we recover:
🌳 Fallen trees & debris — roads may not be fully safe yet
⚡ Downed power lines — treat all lines as LIVE, keep well clear
🌊 Floodwater & slips — avoid driving through water or unstable ground
🛠️ Clean-up hazards — watch for nails, sharp objects, broken fencing
🦠 Contaminated water — wash hands, avoid contact where possible
🐎 Animals unsettled — give space, they may react unpredictably
💡 A few reminders
Check on your neighbours, especially kaumātua and those without support
Conserve water and fuel where you can
Only travel if necessary while roads are still being cleared
Keep phones charged where possible and stay updated through official channels

⚠️ STATE OF LOCAL EMERGENCY DECLARED – ŌPŌTIKI DISTRICT ⚠️

A State of Local Emergency has been declared for the Ōpōtiki District as Cyclone Vaianu approaches.

🌊 Expected impacts include:
- Dangerous coastal conditions
- Large waves and storm surge
- Coastal flooding
- Heavy rain and potential slips

Protecting lives is our absolute priority.

👀 What this means for Ōpōtiki: At this stage, no mandatory evacuations are in place yet, though it is likely some communities will be evacuated.

We are closely monitoring conditions, including expected wave heights and coastal impacts, and will act quickly if needed.

🚨 What you should do now:
- If you live in coastal or low-lying areas, consider self-evacuating early to whānau or friends further inland
- Minimise travel and stay off the roads unless essential
- Stay off beaches and away from the coast
- Secure outdoor items and prepare for power outages
- Have a grab bag ready (medications, warm clothes, chargers, important documents)
