⚠️ Burn off advisory ⚠️

Fire and Emergency New Zealand would like to advise there’ll be three controlled burn offs of forestry slash piles on Collins Ave over the next few days. The first burn will be lit around 8.30am Saturday 23 May.

Wellington is currently in an open fire season.

We are advised the burns will be closely supervised, and all appropriate safety precautions taken. Weather conditions and fire risk will be monitored throughout the activity.

There will be visible smoke from the fires. If you're property is impacted by smoke we recommend closing windows and doors.

If conditions become unsuitable, the burn will be extinguished or postponed.

We are notifying residents and the wider public to reduce unnecessary concern and minimise the number of 111 calls..

The Wellington storm in April brought record amounts of rainfall and severe flooding, causing several landslides across the city ⛈️⛈️

So far, we've received almost 200 NHCover claims for damage to homes and properties in the Wellington region.

Of the claims received to date:
- 66% relate to landslide damage
- 34% relate to storm and flood damage.

These numbers are a reminder of how damaging landslides can be. And while we can't predict when they might happen, we can take important steps to be prepared – like understanding your properties risk, and what your insurance can and can't do.

Natural hazards insurance can help when landslides, storms, and floods, affect your home or land, but there are limits on both the area and the value of what we insure.

Recovery takes time – and we, working with your private insurer, are here to support New Zealand homeowners on that journey 🩵

Have you seen a landslide? Stay safe and support emergency response teams.

⚠ NZ Civil Defence is encouraging people to watch for warning signs like cracks in the ground, tilting trees or fences, sticking doors or windows, or small slips and falling debris, water flowing out of a slope, like a new spring.

⏩ If you see any of these signs please act quickly. Get out of the way. Evacuate the building you are in if you think it is in danger. Staying far from a landslide is your best protection. Remember, slopes can stay unstable even when the weather clears.

📸 If it’s safe to do so, you can really help our landslide response team by reporting what you see. Take a photo like this one and submit a Landslide Observation Report.

By doing this you help us track risks and keep communities safe 👇

Good afternoon everyone,

It’s a beautiful day across the region for us, but we are feeling for our neighbours to the north as Cyclone Vaianu makes itself known.

- The cyclone is now tracking further east than expected, which lessens the chance of impacts to our region. See the link below for more details: https://www.metservice.com/warnings/tropical-cyclone-activity

Continue to expect strong winds, heavy rain and swells from Sunday mid-morning/afternoon to Monday morning, especially along the east coast and eastern hills of the Wairarapa.

Rivers and streams in Kāpiti, Hutt and Wairarapa may also be affected by the heavy rain warning for the Tararua range.

- We are monitoring any impacts for Greater Wellington closely with councils and partner agencies and will be sharing posts if relevant. The pinned post at the top of our page will have the latest watches and warnings.

- At this stage, we aren’t expecting to see the severe impacts regions to the north of us will, but councils and WREMO have extra people on duty over the weekend just in case and we are working together to keep a close eye on things.

Things can change quickly, keep an eye on MetService for the most up-to-date information. https://www.metservice.com/warnings/home

Preparing for severe weather:
👉Secure any outdoor items like wheelie bins, trampolines, and outdoor furniture that could blow around.
👉With the kids on holiday, check they haven't left things lying around outside
👉Clear leaves out of gutters and away from drains - this will help reduce potential flooding if there's rain
👉Check on any family, friends, or neighbours who might need a hand securing items

Take care out there,
- WREMO Duty Team
