Today we had the absolute privilege of watching Aaron De Ridder as he graduated from Te Wānanga o Aotearoa with his Certificate in Bicultural Social Services.
But Aaron’s story with us didn’t start here.
Aaron first came to our service in early 2021, recently released from prison and in the very early stages of recovery. His life up until that point had been shaped by prison, gangs, addiction, violence and dysfunctional relationships. He arrived hesitant and uncertain, but underneath it all was something powerful: a desire for more. More for himself. More for his future. More for his whānau.
Over the next year and a half, Aaron committed himself fully to change. He showed up. He did the hard work. He faced the challenges head-on and worked tirelessly through his recovery journey, reaching milestone after milestone while remaining clean and focused on building a different life.
Aaron is living proof of what can happen when determination, accountability, awhi, and support come together. His journey is not just inspiring, it is transformational.
Today, Aaron sits on our Board of Trustees, where he has served for the past two years. He now walks alongside the tāne in our service through his role with Ngāi Te Rangi as an Oranga Whānau/Mauritau AOD Kaimahi. He has rebuilt strong relationships with his whānau and continues to push himself further through study and service to others.
From prison to purpose.
From addiction to healing.
From surviving to leading others forward.
Aaron, we are beyond proud of you!❤️
