On Wednesday we kicked off Term 2 of our Head Start work experience programme in collaboration with Recreate.

It was great to get out and about, meet our new participants, and start building connections. The day was packed with learning about New Zealand’s biosecurity threats, exploring the beautiful Mount Maunganui environment, and taking time to get to know each other.

I have a feeling the next 8 weeks will be a blast!

Just before the Easter break we had Mel and the Toi Ohomai Level 2 hort students out at one of our dune sites for a day in the sand.

They got straight into the mid-dune, tackling invasive weeds around the stormwater outlet and clearing out about 3 cubic meters from the basin. Not a bad haul for a day’s work.

In between the mahi, we talked through how these dune systems work, what different plants are doing out there, and how the stormwater outlet influence this dynamic environment.

Good people, good yarns, and a solid contribution to the site. A huge thanks to Mel and the crew for coming out and getting involved.

A great way to finish our Head Start programme with Recreate.

For our final day, we spent time at the beach with the crew. Enjoying the fresh air, having a laugh, and reflecting on the journey together.

We followed it up with lunch at McDonald’s and, of course, ice cream to top it all off.

Thank you to everyone who was part of the programme. It’s been a privilege to be part of your journey and see the growth along the way.

What an awesome day learning alongside Mel and the Certificate of Primary Industries (Level 2) Horticulture class at Toi Ohomai Institute of Technology.

The Recreate crew got hands-on experience exploring the world of horticulture. From checking seed viability and understanding seed dispersal, to learning the process of seed preparation and sowing.

We also headed out around the campus to collect native seeds and spent time learning about the importance of pest control in protecting our environment. The group got involved in re-baiting traps for rats, mice and other pests, and checked out Toi Ohomai's wetland project area.

To wrap up the day, the crew were recognised for their hard work with a well-deserved koha.

A big thank you to Mel for welcoming us into the class and sharing her knowledge!

Week 5 of our Head Start work experience programme is done.

We were out in Omokoroa this week with the Recreate crew. Good day on the tools and we managed to pull about 150L of waste before it made its way into the harbour.

Amazing effort from the crew. Well deserved koha to finish the day!

On Wednesday we headed out to Ōmokoroa for a coastal clean up.

We’re pleased to report there was very little rubbish in the area, with less than 50L collected in total.

A big thank you to the locals in Ōmokoroa who clearly take pride in keeping their coastal areas clean and beautiful. Your efforts really make a difference.

Huge shoutout to the amazing team at Rodd & Gunn Bayfair!

Over the years they’ve been incredibly generous to us - keeping our staff looking sharp with polo shirts and helping us suit up for events with their awesome formal wear.

It’s organisations like Rodd & Gunn that truly show what it means to support their local community, and we feel so lucky to have them in our corner.

Thanks for backing us, Rodd & Gunn Bayfair!

This Tuesday gave the crew a proper taste of what plant propagation is all about. We spent the morning in the Tunnel House sowing Knobbly Club Rush and carefully separating Spinifex seeds - tiny, detailed work that shows just how much goes into growing the native plants we see out on the dunes. The Recreate crew got to experience the start of a plant’s life cycle up close.

After lunch we went to the beach, kicked off our shoes, and enjoyed the sand and sunshine.

Each Tuesday the crew also receives a koha to recognise the time and effort they put into the programme, and to show that their contribution to this mahi is valued.

Well done to the awesome crew from Recreate, who wrapped up their third week in our Head Start work experience programme.

This week the team carried out a clean‑up along Pilot Bay, helping keep rubbish out of the moana and protecting a spot loved by the community.
We then moved to our second stormwater site to remove invasive weeds and support the health of the dunes and make way for our planting season.
To finish, the crew headed onto the beach to sieve the wrackline for small plastics, removing the tiny pieces that often go unnoticed but have a big impact.
This mahi continues to be hands‑on learning, teamwork, confidence building, and a meaningful way to care for their environment.
Each day is supported with a koha, recognising their effort and valuing their time and contribution.

A massive shout‑out to the awesome crew from Recreate, who completed their second day in our Head Start work experience programme.

This week the team got stuck in along Turret Road and Memorial Park, removing around 80L of rubbish and helping keep waste out of our waterways. From there, we headed to the Mount, where we cleared approximately 200L of invasive weeds from the sand dunes near a stormwater outlet - creating space for native plants that will be going in during our autumn and winter planting season.

For the team, this is more than environmental mahi. It’s hands‑on learning, teamwork, confidence building, and the chance to contribute to our beautiful environment. Each day is supported with a koha, recognising their effort and showing that their time and contribution are valued.

Head Start’s mission is to restore ecosystems, build capability, strengthen work readiness, and uplift mana. That’s the impact our supporters make possible.
