Go the mighty Kingswood! Who remembers Malcolm Ramsay's fuel-injected Repco-Holden F5000 powered HQ Kingswood? It contested the 1972 Australian Touring Car Championship, the last year under Improved Production regs. It was backed by City-State Motors, the largest Holden dealer in South Australia. It was built by Tony Alcock and packed a Repco-Holden Formula 5000 motor with mechanical fuel-injection and curved injector trumpets. It rolled on 15x10 ROH wheels. City-State wanted to run a Kingswood because they sold a lot more Kingswoods than Monaros and Toranas, but that meant running the 308 Holden-based motor. But this thing was fast! And yep, Ramsay brought it to New Zealand in late 1972 and raced it at Bay Park. And he stuck it on pole, ahead of Marwood, Coppins, Fahey and Dawson. The original no longer exists, but a replica would be a cool addition to the NZ Historic Muscle & Saloon Cars fleet.

The beautiful 1969 Mustang Sportsroof of Graeme Bagrie. Not only is this '69 a total stunner, it was also a well-optioned car from the factory, as an M-code Mach 1 with 351 V8, 4-barrel carb and 4-speed gearbox (thanks for the specs Dale!). Graeme bought the Mustang from John Samios in Australia, and John had previously been racing it with the Australian Trans-Am Group (ATA). And in fact, John brought the Mustang to NZ with one of the ATA Trans-Tasman events to run with our HMSC group during his ownership. Graeme and the Mustang are a great example of the kind of people we love having at NZ Historic Muscle & Saloon Cars; genuine enthusiasts with a love for great cars.

At NZ Historic Muscle & Saloon Cars, we pride ourselves on producing period correct historic race cars, and recreating the epic Group 5 era of the NZ Saloon Car Championship of the late 1960s and early '70s where thundering V8s and screaming 4 and 6-bangers all competed on equal footing. But our efforts to recreate history ends at 3-wide starting grids! How did guys like Paul Fahey, Rod Coppins and Dennis Marwood, as pictured, not trade paint as they scrambled off the line? Terry Croker's Anglia in the Silverstone pits in 1968, and Pat Excell's Anglia in the Hampton Downs pits in 2026. Nearly 60 years separates these two photos, but at NZ Historic Muscle & Saloon Cars our motto remains; as it was, so it shall be.

Did you know, in an effort to grow its brand in the US, Triumph supported a factory race program in the SCCA Trans-Am Two-Five Challenge? It was headed by famed Triumph racer Bob 'Kas' Kastner, and Kastner's team built the Vitesse pictured, which was nicknamed the candy box, because of its boxy shape, the the paint livery. They got 210-horsepower from the 2-litre inline six, which had three 45mm Webers hanging off the side. It rolled on 13x7 inch Minilites and the body featured neatly rolled flares. And it was fast! Unfortunately, the project was underfunded and so the Vitesse was never quite as fast as the Alfa GTAs and Datsun 510s.

Dennis Marwood opens the taps and lights the rear bags exiting the Bay Park hairpin in his Trans-Am Camaro in late 1970, as he battles to stay ahead of Paul Fahey's giant slaying Alan Mann Racing Es**rt FVC. These big-bore versus small-bore battles defined the Group 5 era of the New Zealand Saloon Car Championship, and 55 years later, they form the inspiration for our NZ Historic Muscle & Saloon Cars group. Want to come join the fun at NZ Historic Muscle & Saloon Cars? How about this fantastic looking Lotus Cortina? Its not a real-deal Lotus Cortina, and it'll need some work to comply, such as factory dash and doors, headlights, some interior pieces etc, but you've got the all-important two-door body and Lotus Twin-Cam motor. It looks like a fun car. Check out the advert here: https://www.trademe.co.nz/a/motors/specialist-cars/competition-cars/listing/5977220690

Two different years, but the same corner, and the same white Es**rt fleeing the scene! Our V8 racers are a pretty friendly bunch, but for some reason Paul McCarthy doesn’t want to stick around and hang out with them.
