An Orphaned Baby Tui Bird and How You Can Help

Tui’s are beautiful native birds that feed largely on the nectar of flowers which is facilitated by their extraordinary long tongues. They also occasionally eat insects and may be seen fluttering around native bush with their lovely call audible.

Tui’s are often brought into ARRC needing medical care for a variety of reasons. Sometimes they have broken wings or legs which we are able to set and allow to repair, with rehabilitation they usually make a full recovery and are returned to the wild. Unfortunately, these fractures are occasionally irreparable and these birds are humanely euthanized.

Rhododendron toxicity is another reason why Tui’s require our care. Eating the nectar from these plants can give them an effect similar to a drunken stupor. They are found on the ground lying helpless nearby these plants. We treat them with fluids and a number of medications that often allow for a dramatic and rewarding recovery.

At some times time of the year like spring, we are inundated with fledgeling birds. Baby Tui’s are absolute characters and we thoroughly enjoy nursing these orphans until they are ready for reintroduction into the wild.

“Tilly’s Tumble” tells the story about Tilly the young Tui who tries to put her wings to the test but she falls to the ground when a gust of wind blows. Some kids find her and treat her roughly but another comes to her rescue. After some special care and a week of rest she is able to fly up to her favourite Kowhai tree. This book has been beautifully illustrated by Frith Bartlett who kindly donated her time and expertise.

You’re looking at compassionate care

Every animal that comes through ARRC is treated with compassion, respect, and care.

Whenever possible, we rehabilitate and release wildlife back where they belong. But sometimes, due to severe injuries, suffering, or legal requirements around certain pest species, the kindest option is humane euthanasia.

These decisions are never easy.
And they are never taken lightly.

Our priority is always animal welfare and doing what is best for each individual animal.

When this little one arrived, it was weak, injured, and barely holding on.

But this is what we do.
We fight for the ones who can’t fight for themselves.
