The Auckland anniversary floods of 2023 caused significant damage to the reserve, the Otawa frog population and downstream for several kilometres. Three years later nature is slowly healing the scars.

As the year draws to a close, we want to extend our deepest gratitude to each and every one of you who has given your time energy to conservation efforts at Otawa in 2025.

Whether you were planting natives, clearing tracks, trapping rats, or simply lending a hand when it was needed most — your mahi has made a real difference. Thanks to your dedication, Otawa is thriving as a haven for biodiversity and a place future generations will treasure.

This season, we celebrate not just the holidays, but the close community we’ve built together. May your Christmas be filled with warmth, joy, and the satisfaction of knowing you’ve helped protect our special flora and fauna.

Ngā mihi o te Kirihimete — Merry Christmas and Happy New Year!

(Here is one of the recent critters that won't be killing birds for xmas dinner!)

The power of community-led conservation in the Bay of Plenty is huge! 👍

Thanks to the mahi from SO many community groups we have kōkako populations in the BOP that are not only surviving but increasing!

In fact, some of these kōkako populations are doing SO well, they are expanding into new, unprotected areas of forest. This is where we step in…

KEEP is a partnership of many incredible stakeholders who are working together to create, safe and healthy forest ‘stepping-stones’ to connect these existing kōkako populations in the Bay of Plenty .

It’s an ambitious goal….. and will be the first time a forest corridor project of this scale has happened in NZ!

With such incredible collaboration, we are certain it can be done.
