Tangata whenua, iwi, hapū, marae, whānau and wider community members are warmly invited to attend the upcoming Tauranga City Council hui in support of retaining the Te Awanui Māori Ward.

Date: Tuesday 2 June 2026
Time: TBC - It is likely that this kaupapa will be heard early afternoon, a confirmed time will be sent out by Te Rangapu
Venue: Tauranga City Council Chambers, 90 Devonport Road, Tauranga

At this meeting, Tauranga City Council elected members will determine whether the Te Awanui Māori Ward will remain in place through to the end of the current Council term in October 2028, or whether it will be dissolved.

The Te Awanui Māori Ward provides an important pathway for Māori representation and participation in local decision-making. It ensures Māori voices are present at the Council table on matters affecting our whenua, wai, environment, communities, and future generations.

This is more than a political issue, it is about inclusion, representation, partnership, and ensuring the voices of tangata whenua continue to be heard within local government. Please cut and paste this panui to your pages and networks.

Your presence matters and we encourage our community to attend:
- To support the Te Awanui Māori Ward
- To demonstrate community unity and visibility
- To uphold Māori representation in local government
- To support future generations of Tauranga Moana

Below is the link to the agenda for the upcoming Council Hui. The report for discussion regarding Te Awanui Māori ward is on page 191 of the agenda.https://infocouncil.tauranga.govt.nz/Open/2026/06/CO_20260602_AGN_2903_AT.PDF

Kia ora e te whānau, an opportunity has come up with Bay Learning Academy as a Te Reo Māori Kaiako.

They are trying to get some short programmes off the ground for small study groups in the local community.

Role to start as soon as possible; just two hours in the evening time at days to suit the kaiako. They have all the resources needed, or kaiako can create their own. The wage would be $40+ per hour, depending on experience.

Please see the attached flyers and contact Bay Learning Academy directly if you want to apply or ask any questions at [email protected]

Kia ora whānau, just letting you know that tomorrow's preserving class won't be going ahead.

Our next session is locked in for Tuesday, 9th June at 10:00 AM. Looking forward to catching up and preserving some awesome kai together then.

As part of our emergency plan for the Marae, we recently met with Ricky Mark and Suzy Lynch from NZSurvivor to explore how we can better protect our community. We are all about making sure Mangatawa is ready for anything, and we are so grateful for their tautoko!
A massive mihi to the team at NZSurvivor for kindly donating these Survival Grab-and-Go bags to help get our emergency stores started.
