Lateral movement...

There are 6 types of lateral movement, which are taught in a systematic way, to develop the horse. It is important to keep the work within his/her capabilities, so they can understand each movement before beginning the ne the next phase.

Leg-yield is the first movement

- your horse moves both forward and sideways on 2 tracks
- the horses body stays straight with its head having a slight flexion away from the direction of travel

Start this work in hand, this will help your horse understand what you, the rider is asking it to do.

The rider needs to think about: how they are going to position the horse and support it through this movement.

When riding lateral movements, it's the quality of the steps that count, not the quantity.

Wowsers!! Only a couple of weeks to go before our next rally - Straight Lines & Introducing Lateral Movements.

Ever wondered why your horse can travel straight in the paddock but under saddle the wheels are wobbly? How do those riders get their horse to move sideways across the arena? Then come along to the rally and have a go. Everyone is welcome and all levels are catered for as we demystify dressage. 🦄🦄

Don't forget we also end with a shared lunch so bring a plate and join us as we discuss the day, share a laugh and answer any questions you might have.

Look forward to seeing you all at the grounds!🥰🥰

Well done Janine Van der Horst, in the running for the Dressage NZ volunteer of the year award!

With no nominations received in August and September, the selection panel, together with Vivant Equi, elected to include three additional volunteers in the Volunteer of the Year finalist pool, due to the exceptional quality of the nominations received in May! Congratulations and thank you for your mahi 💜

Dressage Tauranga would not exist without the fantastic volunteers that give up their time, some many many hours, to run the club and provide opportunities and events for riders to enjoy. Each year we ask for nominations and award one of those valuable volunteers the Volunteer of the Year award.
This year's recipient was very easy for me to choose as nearly every nomination that came through was for her. Well done Janine Van der Horst!!!
Janine wears many hats within our team. She has been the club secretary for the last few years, she is show secretary, she is a members coordinator, she is a brilliant contributor at committee meetings and is always coming up with really good ideas to help make processes more streamlined, helps riders new to the sport navigate the entry process which can be confusing and is always looking for ways to help riders feel included and confident. She does all of this and rides and is also a very valued volunteer for Working Equitation! She also took the champion masters and the champion novice and above non-graded awards.
Well done and thank you Janine!! We appreciate you!
