WHAT A GREAT DAY

Today we hosted Timberly Woodturning who both brought their mobile shop as well as we were provided 3 great demos by Terry Scott

We started with a short(ish) session on the importance of thinking personal safety and then on how to sharpen our turning tools consistently.

The second demo focussed on gentle application of tools and thinking about shape which then moved into using those concepts to create a swallow and adding a lidded box to it.

The third demo focused on approaching the turning a burl. Considerations and methods to secure the blank and then to balance up for multi access turning.

Terry explained that the swallow and multi axis pieces take many hours if not days to do the whole process so we appreciated that the had already spent a lot of tim preparing pieces at the various stages so we could step through the whole process

But another bonus was that we got to catch up with many fellow turners from BoP - with great turn out from Taupo, Rotorua, Putararu, Waihi (Hauraki) and Whakatane. We had an attendance of 78 to my count. In my catchups with many attendees the thing that stood out for me was that everyone had come away with two or three new takeouts which they intend to try out when they get home

A big thank you to everyone that attended and to the support from my fellow Guild members who made things run so smoothly

Yeaterday we paid tribute following the passing of one of our long serving members LAUREEN TUBBY

Laurren made over 40 years to Woodcraft practices (scroll saw, Marquetry, Intarsia ) within the NAW network (where she served some years as secretary) but especially through her involvement with the Tauranga Woodcraft Guild.

Laureen held numerous positions within the Guild including years as administrator/secretary/treasurer of the Scrollsaw Group covering training budgets including as organiser for the National Scrollsaw Training Seminar’s the Guild created held for several years before Covid.

A national seminar training programme was designed and co-led by her alongside Guild member Jacob von Holzen. These seminars were acknowledged by NAW it attracted participants from across the country. Through their passion and leadership TWG was acknowledged as the major source of Scrollsaw knowledge and activity in the country. The seminars attracted some 30 plus participants from other areas as well as numerous TWG members.

At yesterday’s tribute we were joined by her family who gifted her scrollsaw and many “plans” so Laurren’s legacy could continue to inspire others in this field

Turning Demos by Terry Scott - Sun 21 June

Lots of interest with a good number coming from nearby clubs

We have had a lot of demand for a Tool Sharpening demo so we are tweaking the timetable to accommodate

08:15 Doors Open and Sales window
09:15 Demo - Tool Sharpening
09:45 Morning Tea Break
10:20 Demo - Turning a bird and other things
12:30 Lunch Break ( reminder it's BYO) and Sales Window
01:30 Demo - Turning a burl and safe setup of odd pieces
03:30 Closing and Sales Opportunity

We will be a bit flexible on timings so you get that chance to buy yourself those midwinter's Xmas presents you've always wanted from Timberly and some interesting wood from Pete's Got Wood

If TWG members could pitch in as needed on the day and help us get the rooms back to normal afterwards it would be appreciated

Looking Forward to Seeing You there
Let your anticipation build

This week I dropped off our latest batch of wig stands to our local Look Good Feel Better co-ordinator. They were down to there last two so timing was opportunity. Met a couple of ladies who have been or soon to be recipients and they expressed there appreciation that a group of people put time and effort into supporting people like themselves during time of personal difficulty and how it gives a bit of an emotional pick up. This batch will probably only last them to Xmas so feel free to make one and leave at the clubrooms.

We also see a steady stream of tulips for Parkinson's being created

I know other members do other projects such as toys for hospital and for Xmas giving
so maybe you could add to these outputs put your hand to creating a few to pass over

TIme to be working on your entries for the 2026 Art of Wood, though I am sure a few are already well underway.

The NAW Committee last week that entry would be free for NAW members this year. A small fee remains for non members - look up the application form

All skill levels are encouraged to enter. You get useful comments back from the judges that can help you on your journey.

I know it is scary to put your work out there but you definitely gain from it and your confidence grows with constructive feedback. I experienced this in my photography journey and am now finding the same as I get into woodcraft

Good luck for your entries this year

Paul

This year’s NAW Expo has just finished in Papatoetoe with overall sponsorship by Carbatec

Two days of inspiration for Turners. My rough count was 160 odd turners

7 diverse and interesting demos including by two international demonstrators. Discussion and critiques before each day and over lunch. Audio visual that kept us close to the work so we could better understand what was going on

Great networking opportunity with people with many diverse skills and senses of humour from all of the country

The Trade hall was equally impressive - I think the exhibitors emptied their shops and brought all that stuff for us to peruse and be tempted by. Carbatec, Timberly, TreeWorx, David Gillard. Carbatec also gave us the international launch of two new lathes so watch out for the upcoming publicity

We had 6 attendees from our club so please catch up with them for their views on what they saw and how they gained from attending.

The good news is that next year’s Expo will be held in the same place so I would highly recommend that for anyone interested in turning you plan to get to it.

A good example of what NAW does for us and how it is so worthwhile for us to support them by being members - brochures are available at our clubrooms
