Wind tunnels have been a point of exploration at House of Science lately – and yes, pigs have been flying 💨
Our staff were putting the new wind tunnel to the test this week with little plastic pilots and their parachutes 🐷
A wind tunnel tests virtually anything that moves through air, revealing how different shapes and materials respond to airflow – and what that means for lift, drag and flight efficiency ✈️
It's a tool that plays a crucial role in aviation, structural engineering and high-performance sport. It’s also just really good fun to throw in different objects and watch what happens!

This National Volunteer Week (14 - 20 June), we’d like to say a huge thank you to every House of Science volunteer – past, present and future 🙏
We’ve come a long way in 13 years and volunteers have played a crucial role in our journey. They still do; without them we couldn't show up for our communities the way we do.
Volunteers fill the gaps on the ground. They make things happen. They’re a huge reason why Kiwi kids across the country are discovering a new passion for science.
It’s a quiet kind of generosity. No spotlight, no fanfare, just people choosing to show up for others. We’re truly grateful for volunteers, every contribution makes a difference 💛
This year's theme for National Volunteer Week is Tōu tau ki te tūao / Your Year to Volunteer. Could this be your year? 🙋

Say hello to a very valued member of the House of Science team – Charlie, our self-appointed "snack supervisor" and lab assistant extraordinaire. Her duties include rigorous desk inspections, treat detection, guest greeting, sniff analysis, taste testing, cuddle support, and very vigorous floor inspections 🐾
She's an expert at napping, snacks, and looking adorable, and specialises in being a very good girl. Payment is preferably in snacks, though head rubs and back scratches are also accepted.
Charlie operates under an unofficial open-door policy – mostly because she just walks in whenever she likes. She doesn't quite understand science, but she's very committed to looking the part.
We'd just like to take a moment to acknowledge her outstanding work. Performance review: 10/10, would hire again. 🐕

Would you bee-lieve it? A resident beehive has moved in at the House of Science head office – and we couldn't be more buzzed about it!
These display hives are an optional extra to our bumblebee kit “What’s the Buzz? / He Aha Tērā Huhū?”
Each self-contained hive has a special viewing window, allowing students to observe a living, breathing example of what they're learning about. Once the in-classroom learning is done, the hive can be placed outside in the school grounds or in a local garden and opened so the next generation of queen bees can take flight and start hives of their own.
In the meantime, our kit creators love having a live reference right on their doorstep as they review our beloved bee kit 🐝✨

Wellington teachers have had a firsthand look at one of the science kits that will help shape the minds of New Zealand’s future workforce 🔬📚🎓
House of Science CEO Chris Duggan and Wellington Region Science Adviser Carol Brieseman delivered a Professional Learning and Development session on Wednesday to 42 Wellington teachers, introducing them to House of Science and giving them hands-on time with our “What do you think? / He aha ō whakaaro?” kit. 🧪
The kit helps students to think like scientists – working with tactile items like mystery tubes, rattlebacks and 'splinks' to encourage observations and conclusions, and inspire bigger questions like the human impact on our environment.
It’s a thrill to see the curiosity this kind of resource sparks in classrooms and staffrooms alike! ✨

Last week, our CEO Chris Duggan joined industry leaders, educators and workforce experts at the Electricity Supply Industry (ESI) Workforce Capability Summit.

Chris presented as part of the Attract panel, sharing her perspective on how we can bring more people into energy careers, and how we can make the pathways there clearer and more visible.

New Zealand's energy sector has a big workforce challenge ahead. At House of Science, we're proud to be part of the conversation about building that pipeline - connecting young people and communities to the science and skills that power our future.

Thanks to the Energy and Infrastructure Industry Skills Board, and the Electricity Engineers' Association, for convening such an important kōrero. There's real momentum behind turning these conversations into action. 💡

A huge night for House of Science ✨
On Tuesday we celebrated an incredible milestone with our supporters, sponsors and volunteers after being named the national supplier of science kits for New Zealand primary and intermediate schools.
What started as one vision in 2013 is now on track to reach schools nationwide by 2027🚀
Held at the Classic Flyers aero hanger, founder & CEO Chris Duggan thanked the community that helped make it possible.
“We’re incredibly excited for what this means for science education across Aotearoa.” 🔬
A huge thanks to all those who attended!

It’s Primary Science Week!

Organised by the New Zealand Association of Primary Science Educators (NZAPSE), you’ll find a range of fantastic ideas, events, and resources to support this year’s theme of ‘Catch that Carbon’ here: https://nzapse.nzase.org.nz/national-primary-science-week-2026/

At House of Science, we were pleased to support the week with our Carbon Crew story, made available to member schools as part of this year’s programme. Through these clever characters and interactive stories, students explore the carbon cycle, understand the importance of balance within the cycle, and learn how human activities can impact it.

We’re delighted to contribute to such an engaging national focus on science learning.
