Tauranga City Sunrise Lions Club

Tauranga City Sunrise Lions Club We are a Lions breakfast club, with an emphasis on community service in all forms, whilst having fun.

We meet on the first and third Wednesday of each month at the Citizen's Club (Upper Boardroom), on 13th Avenue, Tauranga. Sunrise means we are a morning Club and our members enjoy a meeting where we have Breakfast together. Our meetings are organised so that members can get to their day jobs on time! Our major fundraising activity is the sale of firewood (our firewood is a mixture of good quality

woods) - we meet every Tuesday to fell, split and sell firewood to raise funds for community projects. Firewood sells at $130/m^3 (a minimum of 2m^3 per delivery $260) delivered in the Tauranga area (additional delivery costs will apply outside of Tauranga area). Phone 0800546679 or email [email protected] to order. We also sponsor an annual free Magic Show where up to 700 underprivileged and disadvantaged children and helpers have a fun filled outing. We support community organisations within the Tauranga area whilst having a high degree of fun and fellowship with regular club social activities.

On Saturday 15 November, our Club proudly hosted our annual Magic Show, featuring world-class performers from the World Festival of Magic. With two sessions, the atmosphere was electric as audiences of all ages were treated to an unforgettable display of illusion, laughter, and wonder.
From jaw-dropping sleight of hand to heartwarming moments of surprise, the artists captivated everyone in the room. The joy and amazement on the faces of our guests said it all - magic truly brings people together.
A heartfelt thank you to the performers and particularly the local business supporters who made this event possible. Your generosity and enthusiasm help us create lasting memories for our community year after year.
Until next year…keep the magic alive!

Last weekend, our Club proudly celebrated its 25th birthday since chartering on 28 February 2000 - a remarkable milestone marking a quarter-century of ongoing dedicated service to our community. Thanks were expressed to Tauranga Host (who sadly no longer exist) for having the vision to form our Club.
Members gathered for an evening rich in laughter, storytelling, and heartfelt reflection. The room buzzed with energy as Russell, our longest-serving member, shared vivid tales from the early days, from pot-luck dinner evenings designed to spark interest in joining to ambitious first projects (who could forget the infamous manure drive!), and the many meeting places and projects that have shaped our identity over the years.
It was fascinating to hear how technology has quietly retired some of our earlier projects, while others, like our flagship firewood initiative, continue to thrive as the backbone of our Club’s fund raising efforts.
The evening was an opportunity to reconnect, reminisce, and recognise the enduring spirit that has carried us through the years. Special thanks go to Chris for leading the evening, Russell for his rich recollections, Ken for his Car Fair tales, Dave 1 for chronicling the firewood legacy, Dave 2 for keeping us laughing, and Keith for his unforgettable story involving a wasp and an unfortunate landing spot!
More than just a party, the celebration was a tribute to the people who’ve made this Club what it is: a place of purpose, generosity, and genuine camaraderie. The stories reminded us why we serve and why we keep coming back.
As we look ahead, we do so with pride in our legacy and excitement for what’s to come. Here’s to the next 25 years of Lions service. Stronger together, and always finding fun in the work we do for our community.

Recently our club was proud to host the 28th annual Brian Hammond Memorial Shield debate between Tauranga Girls’ College and Tauranga Boys’ College, a longstanding tradition that celebrates critical thinking, eloquence, and civic engagement in a compelling head-to-head contest of ideas and rhetoric!
This year’s moot was “This house rejects the “make it 16” movement in New Zealand”. This topic refers to the youth-led, non-partisan campaign advocating for the voting age to be lowered to 16 in New Zealand - a timely and thought-provoking issue that sparked robust debate.
Tauranga Girls’ College took the affirmative stance, arguing in favour of rejecting the movement. Their team comprised Mina Ranui, Aku Gautam, and Pearl Vahey-Bourne. Tauranga Boys’ College, defending the negative position, was represented by Harry Perry, Jacob Corrigan, and Sam Mitchell.
The debate was once again expertly adjudicated by Bruce Farthing, whose thoughtful analysis and impartial guidance ensured a fair and rigorous contest. His post-debate comments were fair and useful. Team mentors Gary Corrigan (TBC) and Chris Rumbold (TGC) provided invaluable support and preparation behind the scenes.
After a tightly contested and intellectually rich debate, Tauranga Boys’ College emerged victorious, securing the Shield in a well-earned win. Special congratulations go to Jacob Corrigan, who was named Best Speaker for his outstanding clarity, poise, and persuasive delivery.
This annual event continues to honour the legacy of Brian Hammond by fostering respectful discourse and empowering young voices to engage with the democratic process.
