Ka kō te kōkako | Kōkako are present at Te Wao Nui o Tapuika!

For many years, the melodious call of the kōkako has been absent from Te Wao Nui o Tapuika.

This week, after years of mahi to restore the health and mauri of Te Wao Nui o Tapuika, a survey team confirmed the presence of three kōkako in the Te Matai forest. One pair and a single bird were observed during a walkthrough survey.

While we cannot say for sure what has contributed to their appearance, it follows several years of iwi led restoration efforts within Te Wao Nui o Tapuika, alongside a recent kōkako call broadcasting project and there is also the natural movement of kōkako through the wider landscape.

Whatever the reason, finding kōkako in Te Matai forest is a big deal for Tapuika and many people and organisations involved in this space.

We acknowledge the support of TECT, BayTrust and Manaaki Kaimai Mamaku Trust whose contribution has helped support our restoration and monitoring mahi within Te Wao Nui o Tapuika. Our work is also done in conjunction with KEEP, Kaharoa Kōkako Trust and Te Papa Atawhai.

This restoration is a long-term journey, and these tohu keep us excited and motivated to continue the mahi in the ngahere mō ngā uri whakatupu te take.
