Johnson Reserve Care Group Our Care group has been working in the reserve for 20+ years. We work on Wednesday and Thursday mornings.

It’s great to see the discussion on the Welcome Bay face book page about Taiwanese or tui cherry trees. If you have one in your yard please get rid of it. Welcome Bay could become the first area in Tauranga to become tui cherry free!!!!

So good to see Johnson Reserve Care open to the public once again. Thanks to Glen and the team at CBC civil for the great job they have done. The care group have continued working in the reserve well away from the main track and the reserve is looking great Enjoy!

It's that time of the year. Taiwan Cherry aka Tui Cherry is flowering away like crazy. The care group spend hours pulling out many hundreds of Tui Cherry seedlings. They would take over the reserve if we let them.
Yes the flowers are lovely and the tui do like them but these cherries are like lollies for children, bright and attractive but native plants offer much better food.
For the last three years we have been contacting local resident and asking if they would consider removing these trees from their gardens. We have been pleasantly surp[irised bye the number of people who have done so.
If you know any one who has a tui cherry in their garden you might suggest that they join the movement and remove it.

Working the reserve yesterday was a day of two halves.
First part of the morning saw ua planting trees that we had kindly been donated by a wonderful Welcome Bay resident.
Then we went into the bush behind Langstone Street and spent the next couple of hours picking up rubbish that has been thrown over the fence. It is quite disheartening!
