Some journeys take the scenic route…. So we’re stoked to announce that Fig has finally found her home!

Fig arrived with her sister after being abandoned at a popular holiday spot. She was the quieter of the pair, but it didn’t take long for her personality to shine through. Curious, chatty, inclusive and completely unbothered by our motley crew - Fig fitted right in.

As the months went by, Fig became a personal favourite and one of the biggest personalities at HQ.

At 5 months she was ready to adopt, but hadn’t quite found her people, and busied herself with an internship role where she helped raise, comfort and teach our newest arrivals. She showed them how to cat, offered company when they needed it, and became part of the village that helped so many others find their way home.

And then, finally at 10 months, it was Fig’s turn.

A trial turned into a new home - and now she’s spending her days with her new mum, and foster sister Zuki ❤️

She’ll keep the name Fig but we think ‘Miss Cleo’ deserves an honourable mention for this curious soul 🔎✨

Once again, the right people come along at the right time, and Fig’s journey was worth the wait. Happy next chapter kitto 🏡

📣 Community rehome for two senior souls - Zulu and Gossip 🐈‍⬛🐕

📍 Pukehina

We’re sharing these two on behalf of their family, whose circumstances have changed unexpectedly.

Their parents are seeking either:

🤝 A long term foster (1-2years, financial contribution offered).
🏡 Or a forever home together or apart.

Zulu — 12 year old Moggy

This black and white honey is a timid girl at first, but once she trusts you, Zulu is incredibly affectionate.

Her start to life set her up for the survivor she was meant to be. She was found floating down a river on a sack with her littermates.

She later lost a leg after being shot, but has adjusted and gets around remarkably well. Zulu is healthy, and accustomed to indoor/outdoor living.

Gossip — 12 year old Foxy

Also a fit, healthy and very affectionate senior girl who loves cuddles, walks and having fun!

She’s comfortable on lead and enjoys exercise. She can bark when excited by new people off lead and may pant when stressed in unfamiliar situations, but settles with time and reassurance.

📌 What we’re looking for:

An understanding and patient home where they can enjoy their golden years.

Both are social with people and other animals once they’ve had time to build confidence.

We’d love to keep Zulu and Gossip together, but if the right home for them as a pair can’t be found, we would consider separating them.

If you think you could offer one or both of these senior sweethearts the home they deserve, please get in touch with Moggies❤️

Are you ready for the commitment?

When you bring an animal into your family, you’re not committing to the life you have today.

You’re committing to them through all the lives you may live along the way.

Kids grow up.
Relationships change.
Careers evolve.
Jobs come and go.
Homes change.
Circumstances rarely stay the same.

A lot can happen over one or two decades.

And that’s something worth thinking about before you adopt.

What happens if you move?
If you have children?
If your relationship changes?
If work takes you somewhere unexpected?
If money becomes tight?
If your cat develops health problems?
If the kitten you brought home becomes a quiet, elderly cat who needs more time, more care and more veterinary support than they once did?

These aren’t reasons not to adopt.

They’re reasons to understand what you’re saying yes to.

We have 100’s of requests for kittens, but very few for cats. In addition, one of the most common age groups we’re asked to rehome are seniors.

And that transition is hardest for them.

After years of knowing the same home, the same people, the same smells and routine, suddenly everything is different.

For an elderly cat, rehoming is losing the only life they’ve ever known.

Sometimes circumstances genuinely change. We understand that.

But the best way to protect an animal from that displacement is to think about the long term before you bring them home.

If you’re considering adoption, please don’t just ask:

“Does this cat fit my life?”

Ask:

“Can I commit to their life as mine changes?”

Because they may be with you for 15 years.
Maybe 20.

Your life will almost certainly look different by then. As theirs will too.

Miss Petal is looking for her next chapter 🌸

Petal was found living under a house in Whakatāne. She is microchipped, but despite attempts to reach her people, no one could be located.

Thankfully, a kind person stepped up and gave Petal somewhere safe to land.

What we know about Petal:
🐾 Around 1–3 years old
🐾 Desexed
🐾 More comfortable around dogs than other cats
🐾 An absolute little smooch once she feels safe ❤️

What Petal is working on:
Petal is still coming to terms with losing her family and everything familiar to her. While she works through that, she feels safest in a smaller, quiet space where she can take things at her own pace.

She needs someone willing to give her the time, patience and security to settle into her new life. In return, you’ll earn the love of a tortie and have a sassy love bug for life.

📍Note that Petal is based in Whakatane and we’re on behalf of one of our rescue friends 🫶

If you think you could offer Petal the home she deserves, please PM the rescue or contact Carlee on 021 718 082

If you’ve had an accidental litter, and are considering giving those kittens away for ‘free’, please think about what happens next.

These kittens came from a family who had found themselves feeling overwhelmed with the number of cats on their property.

And it wasn’t the first time.

The previous litter of kittens were given away within a matter of hours, though one joined us in the rescue after being found poorly and abandoned just two weeks later.

Unfortunately, Mum got pregnant again. As did her daughters.

More kittens. More homes needed. More pressure on a family who was already struggling to keep up.

After several litters, the family reached a point where they asked for help.

This is where outcome changed.

The family was provided with carriers, food and flea and worm treatments. And the mothers were desexed, removing the immediate source of the problem rather than continuing the cycle of finding somewhere for the latest litter to go.

If this sounds like your situation, please reach out for an understanding of your options.

We’re not here to judge, just support a safer outcome for everyone.

📍Please note: these kittens aren’t available for adoption - comments asking to adopt one will go answered.

It’s exciting news! 🎉

To celebrate their 40th birthday, the amazing team at Welcome Bay Vets are sponsoring the desexing of 40 of our kittens through their clinic!

Cool huh?! As rescue advocates they’re celebrating 40 years of caring for community animals by helping prevent the next generation of unwanted litters 🙌

Desexing tackles overpopulation at the source. Every kitten desexed is one less cat able to contribute to the cycle of unplanned litters.

And there’s even more happening for their 40th anniversary!

Head over to the Welcome Bay Vets page to check out their sponsorship wall, see their other anniversary promotions, and find out how you can get involved - including helping name some of the sponsored kittens! 👀

A huge thank you to Welcome Bay Vets for celebrating 40 years by investing in the future of community animals 💛

40 years. 40 kittens. A super positive impact 🫶

🐾 40 YEARS. 40 KITTENS.

We’re celebrating 40 years of caring at Welcome Bay Veterinary Clinic by giving back - we’re sponsoring 40 rescue kittens through Moggies - Homes for cats and kittens 🐱

We’re covering their desexing, microchipping, first vaccination, flea and worm treatments to help give these little ones the best possible start.

But before we introduce them, we need your help...

🐱 WE NEED TO NAME OUR KITTENS!

We’ll have a different theme each time and want to hear your best name suggestions.

First up: CAT PUNS! 😹

Katy Purry? Richie McClaw? Fur-gie? The more ridiculous, the better!

Drop your best kitten-pun names in the comments 👇

And a huge thank you to the amazing team at Moggies for the work they do helping cats and kittens across our community.

40 years of caring — and 40 little lives we’re proud to help along the way. ❤️🐾

‘Kitten season’ is coming, but we’re not quite there yet!

Which means no one younger than 6 months is currently ready for adoption 🏡

(We’re still looking for special homes for our older cats, older kittens and oddballs though) 🫶

Rescue is always busy, but the colder months are naturally quieter when it comes to animals coming into care. In contrast, late spring and summer are the main breeding months, so we’re likely to start seeing younger kittens become available from November onwards.

And while waiting can be frustrating, this quieter period is important for us too ❤️

No kittens is a good thing. It gives us some breathing room to focus on the cats and kittens already in care - especially those who haven’t found their homes through the year.

We know some families have been waiting a few months, and we’d love to see everyone find the right animal for their home.

Thank you for being patient with us 🐾

Free vs Fee

What is the better value?

Our current adoption fee is $220.

This fee helps to cover the care your kitten or cat receives. At a minimum this is:

✅ Desexing
✅ Microchipping
✅ Vaccination
✅ Regular flea and worm treatment

⭐️ It’s supported by vetting homes for compatibility, adoption trials, settling-in advice, and familiar food to ease the transition into a new home.

⭐️ ⭐️ It also contributes to veterinary care for the next animal in need, subsidised desexing in the wider community, food and resources for families doing it tough, and rehabilitation, education and outreach that can prevent cats and kittens from needing rescue.

So when comparing a $220 rescue kitten with a free kitten, please look beyond the price tag and consider the value that number adds rather than what it takes away.

Our little biker is all grown up 🏍️

If you’ve been following his journey with us, Helmet now Timmy, was one of our FIP cases.

FIP (feline infectious peritonitis) is a serious disease caused by a mutation of feline coronavirus. While feline coronavirus itself is extremely common and usually causes little or no illness, in some cats it can mutate and lead to FIP.

For a long time, a FIP diagnosis was not one to be walked away from. Thankfully, effective antiviral treatment has changed that picture dramatically.

For Timmy, that meant eight weeks of medication, regular monitoring, and an extra dose of patience while we staggered his desexing and vaccinations around his recovery.

And now?

Things are looking pretty cheery for the ginger dude✨

He has a spark for life, an impressive amount of orangecat chaos, and - most importantly - a family who absolutely adore him.

His foster mum, now Mum Mum, says:

“We just feel incredibly grateful to have been a part of Helmet’s journey. Now known as Timmy.

It has been an honour to watch him grow into his crazy, wonderful little ginger self.

He has truly become a part of our family, and we couldn’t imagine life without him.”

And it isn’t just the humans who have fallen for Timmy.

The goats and chickens are fans too 🐐🐓

5 weeks to 5 months, Timmy was home all along 🧡

And so it begins…

Or, more accurately, continues.

Meet Sakura 🍒🌸

At just eight months old, Sakura found herself with a very short deadline to be rehomed.

She’s shy, but very sweet - and underneath that initial hesitation is a lovely young cat who deserves the chance to settle somewhere safe and permanent.

Sakura also comes to us as a high risk candidate: she’s not yet been desexed.

Female kittens can become pregnant from just four months of age. That means the window between “tiny kitten” and “capable of having kittens herself” is surprisingly short.

Cats end up in these situations for all sorts of reasons, and often things snowball.

A kitten becomes a young adult. Circumstances change. And suddenly there’s a short deadline, a cat who needs somewhere to go, and another rescue trying to find space in an already crowded system.

For Sakura, we’re going to hit reset.

She’ll receive the care she needs, be desexed, and have the time and support to find the right home.

Take two 🎬

Welcome to Moggies, Sakura 🌸🍒
