October is ADHD awareness month so here’s a story of my AuDHD brain and movement 🛼
A fun new development this year has been skating with All Skate Tauranga ! I’ve made it through levels 1-4 so far this year. It started off as a way to connect with some people in IoM but it has become so much more! A fun way to stay active, and an incredible way to connect in the community! All Skate provides inclusive and adaptive rollerskating classes, so that everyone can have the opportunity to skate if they want to.
This year we got to compete in two beginners competitions, one with Skatescool Tauranga in August (last 4 pics) and then another with Tauranga Roller Skating Club (first two pics) on Sunday, which were both awesome! If you’ve ever wanted to learn to rollerskate in an inclusive environments, check out All Skate!
This year I have been learning about how good movement is for our often overactive minds, especially since my ADHD diagnosis last year! I have found such a newfound joy in realising how good movement is… for my mind… my emotional regulation, energy and motivation. I think I’m the strongest + most coordinated + active I’ve ever been.
I was always such a clumsy kid, uncoordinated, awkward, often the last one picked for things. My motor skills were delayed, I had terrible hand-eye coordination (or coordination in general) and I struggled to focus in team games. Although I did love things like ice skating, swimming and other things (like flipping on the couch when I came home from school as a teen 😂) I never really viewed myself as an active person. Now I realise that I just needed to be in the right environment, with the right tools and find what works for me and brings me joy!
I am reminded of my tween years when I was obsessed with ice skating and watching Dancing on Ice hehe! I didn’t know I would end up being someone learning a skating routine!
Learning to find childlike joy in movement 🥰
Thanks All Skate for creating this great space 🥰 Definitely check out All Skate if you are looking for a welcoming space to learn, have fun and be active -Emma
