Tauhara Retreat and Conference Centre NZ

Tauhara Retreat and Conference Centre NZ Tauhara is a retreat and conference centre located in Acacia Bay, overlooking Lake Taupo in the centre of New Zealand's North Island.

At Tauhara we are concerned with the wholeness and interdependence of all creation. We recognise that every person is a responsible sovereign being in that wholeness. Therefore, we are concerned that all aspects of our environment - natural, economic, social and political - shall be so shaped to enable each person to realise his or her individual purpose within the unity of all. We acknowledge that humanity is not to be coerced, but will be inspired from within.

Ka mutu he totara nui
Alas, another passing to report. Many people will have met Harry Duncan at Tauhara, especially at our Tuesday volunteers gatherings. At 94 years of age, after a very eventful life as a teacher then an officer in the NZ Army as head of all their educational and training programmes, Harry peacefully departed this life last night. He was a noted trout fishing afficiano, known for his uncanny ability to suss out where the wily fish were lurking.
It was his wife, Yvonne, who would have been better known by Tauhara folk, as a frequent presence. She worked at the Peace Foundation for a period, and was very active creating and promoting the Cool Schools Mediation programme in NZ primary and secondary schools. She brought Time Out for Teachers retreats to Tauhara Centre, and was a regular participant in Tauhara Committee and governance processes.
Though not a frequent flyer at Tauhara (he did at one stage do a strategic planning analysis for our Trust Board), Harry very much supported her participation, and while she was busy doing all the korero, he was feeling the bliss of casting his line over the many world reknown trout pools of the Taupo district.
We wish Harry a heartfelt "God speed!" and we hold Yvonne in our loving embrace

Taupo turned on a splendid day today for the memorial service commemorating the life of Shirley Dodds, one of our past Co-ordinators. Shirley passed away at 85 years of age on Anzac Day, but she lives on in the hearts and memories of all who met her. May she rest in the Light

Big thanks to all the people who responded to our earlier post about the passing of Shirley Dodds.
She wasn't just an "office wallah", as the photos below reveal: she often rolled her sleeves up and waded into the construction and garden jobs, too.
Her memorial service will be held at Tauhara Centre this coming Monday at 11am.
BTW, I want to add a big thumbs up to Vernon Smith, who over many years, has done a great job as volunteer visual archivist for Tauhara. He supplied the photos I have shared.
Best wishes
Stephen Grace

It was with sadness that we learned recently our old friend of many decades, Shirley Dodds, a stalwart of Tauhara Centre, had passed away.
Shirley served Tauhara in so many different ways as the Centre cook for a period, a long-term member of the Committee, Co-ordinator(Centre Manager) for several separate spells, and advisor to the Trust Board.
But more than that, she became a valued friend to so many of the staff, Trustees, group organisers and participants. So many very different energies coalesced at Tauhara over the years, requiring patience, interested attention, careful management, neutrality and a love of people in all their manifestations. Shirley had all these qualities, often through very trying circumstances over the years.
She also had a deep spiritual faith that bouyed her throughout her long life, enabling her to embrace people of so many different faith traditions, spiritual paths, philosophical dispositions or none of the above, which made her so true to the inclusive mission statement of Tauhara.
She will be remembered with love, affection, delight and respect when we gather at Tauhara on May 25th for her memorial (further details to be confirmed).
Rest in peace, Shirley, after a long life well lived

This "summer" is all over the place meteorologically, but life goes on apace at Tauhara.
The year began with a summer Camatkara Rise Yoga retreat led by Sarah Hon. Then, in a complete contrast, Gerrard Smith brought his annual Ironman Camp to help prepare for this gruelling event in March. Radha Kuzeva then brought an atmosphere of deep calm and contemplation with her silent meditation retreat. A weekend later we hosted the beautiful wedding of Alyssa (who up until a year or so ago was our kitchen lead cook. Today, a group of Australian women arrive for a yoga retreat. What a wonderful cavalcade of quite different energies coming to the Centre
