A Beautiful Walking Stick Given a New Lease of Life

Another rewarding project completed at the Taupō Community Men’s Shed.

One of our members recently had the opportunity to repair this beautiful, hand-carved wooden walking stick as the handle had broken off. The intricate carving and detail make it a really special piece, and it was great to be able to restore it and bring it back to a condition where it can be enjoyed again.

Projects like this are what the Men’s Shed is all about — sharing skills, helping others, restoring and repairing items, and giving things a new lease of life.

A lovely piece of craftsmanship that we were very pleased to help preserve. 👏🔨🪵

Giving an old favourite a new lease on life

Sometimes the projects that come through the doors of the Taupō Community Men’s Shed aren’t about making something from scratch — they’re about fixing, restoring and giving something another chance rather than it being sent to the rubbish tip.

This little kids’ bike had seen better days, with the seat needing replacement and some repairs to get it safely back on the road for the young fella to enjoy again

Our members got stuck in, repaired the bike and replaced the seat, giving it a fresh new look and, more importantly, another opportunity for a young rider to enjoy it.

It’s these simple community jobs that remind us what the Men’s Shed is all about — sharing skills, helping others and keeping useful things out of the landfill.

❤️ Craftsmanship with a deeper meaning

There are some projects that mean a little more than others.

This beautiful ash urn/box was handcrafted by Trevor here at the Taupō Community Men’s Shed, and it is a wonderful example of the care, skill and craftsmanship that our members put into their work.

What makes this particular piece so special is the story behind the timber.

The variety of native timbers used to create the urn were personally selected by the gentleman before he passed away. His family then entrusted those pieces of timber to us, asking that they be transformed into something meaningful that could honour his life.

Trevor has carefully brought those different timbers together, creating something that is not only beautifully crafted, but also carries a very personal connection to the man it was made for.

From the contrasting colours and grain of the native timbers, to the detailed joinery and finishing touches, every part has been made with care.

For us at the Men’s Shed, this is what it’s all about — using our skills to create something meaningful for others, while keeping the stories and memories of loved ones alive through the things we make.

📚 ANOTHER LITTLE COMMUNITY LIBRARY HAS ARRIVED! 📚

We’re delighted to have installed another Taupō Community Book Library, this time outside Café Lacus, at The Landing, 650 Lake Terrace, Wharewaka.

The idea is simple: Take a book, leave a book (free)-helping to share the joy of reading and bringing a little more connection into our community.

🐾 Another Community Project Completed! 🐾

The members of the Taupō Community Men’s Shed were pleased to build and donate this large custom-made wooden dog crate for the Taupō SPCA.

Our shed is all about using our skills to give back to the community, and it’s rewarding to know this crate will help provide a safe and comfortable space for dogs while they’re being cared for and waiting for their forever homes.

A big thank you to the wonderful team at the Taupō SPCA for the amazing work they do every day looking after animals in need. We’re proud to be able to support such a worthwhile organisation.
