Meet Wolly the Wētā, Craters of the Moon’s biggest celebrity… literally.
He’s one of the heaviest insects on Earth, which is basically the bug version of being a bodybuilder.

New Zealand has over 100 types of wētā, and Wolly insists he’s the cutest.
Some of his cousins are endangered because birds think they’re a tasty snack — Wolly says he’s “off the menu” due to his thick‑boy energy.

Come say hi. Locals are half price, and Wolly loves a crowd.

Say hello to Lord Featherington 🪶👑
The most stylish resident at Craters of the Moon!
He is a ring‑necked pheasant introduced to NZ in the 1800s, can dash at 60 km/h 🏃‍♂️💨, prefers running to flying, sleeps in a luxury tree‑top suite 🌳✨, and rocks a waistcoat that puts us all to shame.
Our 52‑hectare park is full of amazing birdlife 🐦💛
Join us for bird feeding daily at 10am, 1pm, and 3pm.
Come meet our native and non‑native feathered friends! 🌞🪺

The Craters of the Moon geothermal walkway wanders through a weird, other-worldy, landscape featuring bubbling craters and steaming vents. This is one of Taupo's must do activitites when visiting our region. Open 364 days a year from 8.30am
