Sport Hawke’s Bay – He Oranga Poutama Wairoa❤️
One of the greatest privileges of my role is being able to support our communities and our people to become more active through recreation and sport.
It’s about breaking down barriers—whether that’s trying a new sport, stepping into an unfamiliar environment, or overcoming that little voice that says, “I don’t think I can do this.” Then witnessing that transform into, “I never thought I could… but I did!” ❤️
Over the past eight weeks, we’ve had the privilege of being part of an incredible wellbeing journey with the amazing staff from New World Wairoa through the ‘Sisters We Got This Challenge.’ Looking to introduce a new activity, they chose pickleball—and if you know me, my heart rate immediately went into overdrive!
With the full support of managers Grant and Crystal, we kicked off with a couple of introductory sessions in a fun, safe, and supportive environment. From there, their pickleball journey truly began.
Seven weeks later, after dedicating one evening each week to learning the fundamentals of the game, they proudly entered the 2026 Matariki Corporate Pickleball Challenge, holding their own in their very first team tournament. ❤️
What an incredible achievement.
Their journey is a true reflection of commitment—not only to their own health and wellbeing, but also to strengthening workplace relationships, teamwork, and camaraderie. They embraced every challenge with enthusiasm, encouragement, and plenty of laughter.
The result? We now have a new community of pickleball players with the confidence to book their own court time, continue improving their skills, and introduce their whānau and friends to a sport they’ve grown to love. ❤️
New World is a people-focused business, serving the Wairoa community seven days a week, from 7am–7pm. It has been an absolute pleasure working alongside Louise, Grant, Crystal, and your wonderful team. Thank you for trusting us to be part of your wellbeing journey. We can’t wait to see you all back on the pickleball court soon!
An acknowledgement also goes to CLM and your staff for your ongoing collaboration and for providing a facility that enables us to continue supporting the Wairoa community and this important kaupapa.
Together, we’re not just growing a sport—we’re building healthier, more connected communities, one paddle at a time. ❤️
