Pupuke Birdsong Project

Pupuke Birdsong Project The hub for volunteer environmental restoration action in Takapuna North area, supporting restoration and pest control activities.

Thanks to the Devonport Takapuna Local Board for supporting this Takapuna North Community Trust project. We live in such a beautiful place and we need to work together to keep it that way. The Takapuna North Community Trust takes great pride in supporting and coordinating local environmental restoration. In July 2019, a pest eradication and environmental restoration plan for Takapuna North was com

pleted by representatives from local volunteer groups and Council representatives. The plan was originally named the North Shore Birdsong project but has been changed to Pupuke Birdsong Project to better reflect our area. Its main aim is to coordinate a local pest free and restoration plan in line with the goals of Pest Free Auckland 2050. The Pupuke Birdsong Project Environmental Coordinator, Tabitha Becroft, is working towards implementing the pest free and restoration plan for the Takapuna North area between Takapuna and Sunnynook. If you're keen to get involved in local restoration projects, please get in touch with her via [email protected] or visit our website to see how you can get involved.

Our favourite time of year has arrived!

The sites are ready, the van is packed to the brim with precious cargo and you're invited to the party!

Join us in Milford this Saturday for the first of many planting days. Our carefully selected native trees and grasses provide food and shelter for native birds and fish, stabilise the stream banks, and form a protective canopy that shades out invasive plants.

Registration link below. Bring covered shoes and gloves if you have them, we'll provide training, tools and refreshments after 🌱🌿🌳

A cloudy morning set the perfect scene for a warming cup of tea and delicious morning tea treats as we kicked off our recent container gardening session at Grow Forrest Hill. The knowledgeable Phoebe kept attendees from Age Concern Auckland's Korean group engaged with a wealth of practical gardening tips throughout the workshop.

As the session wrapped up, the sun emerged right on cue — and so did the smiles, as everyone headed home with their very own herb container in hand.

Fisheries NZ is reviewing how recreational shellfish harvesting is managed across the Auckland Coromandel coastline - and submissions are open until 12 June.

This review exists because of ongoing concerns about the sustainability of intertidal shellfish in the area. Four options are on the table, ranging from partial to full closures of the intertidal zone (from the high tide mark to 200m offshore), with some options also introducing daily limits for species that don’t currently have one.
These are exactly the kinds of decisions that shape the health of our coastlines for decades. Intertidal zones are among the most ecologically important - and most accessible - marine habitats we have. Once the pressure on them exceeds what they can recover from, it’s very hard to reverse.

Fisheries NZ is required to consider community feedback, and a strong response from people who care about these ecosystems carries real weight. If you’ve ever loved a rockpool, gathered shellfish, or just valued knowing these places are thriving - this is a straightforward way to have your say.

Submissions close 5pm, 12 June 2026.

Here’s a look at some of the environmental action happening right here in Devonport-Takapuna.

Earlier this year, families gathered at Discover Pupukemoana, a free community event delivered by Pupuke Birdsong Project with support from the Devonport-Takapuna Local Board and Auckland Council.

From guided kayaking and weaving workshops to seed planting and hands-on learning, the day helped raise awareness about Lake Pupuke’s ecology and the steps we can all take to help protect it.

We’re proud to support community groups working to restore habitats, protect native wildlife and connect people with the natural places that make our area special.

Watch the video to see how local partnerships are making a difference for our environment.
