Always a good time to make a plan whanau

🌊 It's time to talk tsunami.

All of Aotearoa's coastline, including Auckland, is at risk from tsunami due to our position in the Pacific Ring of Fire.

While rare, they’re extremely powerful, and can travel inland much further than you'd expect.

Take a minute to think: if I got an Emergency Alert warning of a tsunami right now, or felt an earthquake so strong that I can't stand up, would I know what to do and where to go?

A few simple steps now can make a big difference later:

🗺️ Check if where you live, work, or play is in a tsunami evacuation zone
🏃 Know your quickest route to move inland or to higher ground
📍 Agree on a meeting place with your whānau in case you get separated.

⏰ This daylight saving, take a few minutes to make (or refresh) your household emergency plan. A plan might feel small now, but in an emergency, it can make all the difference for you and your household.

🌱 Spring's just getting started, but we're already thinking ahead to summer - here's why.

You've probably seen the headlines by now - El Niño's been confirmed for summer 2026/27, and it's shaping up to be one of the strongest on record.

For Tāmaki Makaurau, that could mean reduced rainfall, increased wildfire risk, hotter-than-average temperatures, and stronger winds.

🏖️You don’t have to abandon your summer plans, but now's a good time to prepare.

That's why we've pulled together our El Niño Information Hub, so you've got all the trusted advice in one place👉 aem.govt.nz/heat

All are welcome next Thursday - if you are interested in volunteering to help your community in a natural disaster, please come along, comment below or PM us if you want to chat before then ☺️

Are you looking to connect and give back to your local community?

Our group is based at your community marae Te Herenga Waka o Orewa Marae, ready to open up in the event of a natural disaster to share information, resources and manaaki/care and a cuppa with our community. We also work with other groups all around the HBC.

We are looking for people in our neighbourhood who would like to join our small team of friendly volunteers, and ideally have some availability during business hours. Whether you have cuppa tea skills or people skills, organisational or radio/communication we would love to hear from you ☺️

We can also offer further training in first aid, psychological first aid, and community response.

Come along to our volunteer info night at Te Herenga Waka o Orewa, 2a Blue Gum Road, Silverdale - 7pm-8.30pm, Thurs 25th June. Please send a PM for further info

Today, members from our emergency hub here at Te Herenga Waka o Orewa along with Hibiscus Coast, Waiwera, Whangaparāoa and Stillwater attended the Auckland Emergency Management Forum.

It was a day full of learning, connection and inspiration, with valuable kōrero around emergency preparedness, community resilience and supporting our neighbourhoods during times of need.

We’re grateful for the opportunity to connect with others across Tāmaki Makaurau.

He waka eke noa – we’re all in this together.
Ngā mihi nui to Auckland Emergency Management and everyone who made the day such a success 💙

🚨 Community Update – Emergency Hub Preparation 🚨

Our team at Te Herenga Waka o Orewa has been actively preparing the marae as an emergency hub, should it be needed for our community during the approaching severe weather event.

At this stage, the marae is not yet open, but we are ready to support whānau if required. A decision will be made on Sunday, and we will share an update as soon as possible to confirm if and when the hub will open.

In the meantime, we encourage everyone to stay prepared and keep the following important numbers on hand:

📞 Emergency (Police/Fire/Ambulance): 111
📞 Healthline: 0800 611 116
📞 Auckland Emergency Management: 09 301 0101
📞 Civil Defence: www.civildefence.govt.nz

Please check in on your neighbours, secure your homes, and stay up to date with official weather warnings.

Stay safe, stay connected, and look after one another 💙
