Our Rotorua Wildland Consultants Ltd team have succumbed to World Cup fever. They might be seeing things.
Fungi are being mistaken for footballs.
This โballโ is actually tลซtae whetลซ, a basket fungus (๐๐ญ๐ฆ๐ฐ๐ฅ๐ช๐ค๐ต๐บ๐ฐ๐ฏ ๐ค๐ช๐ฃ๐ข๐ณ๐ช๐ถ๐ฎ). It was spotted outside our offices in some leaf-litter.
Itโs not only the external anatomy of tลซtae whetลซ thatโs strikingly unusual.
Underneath the white, fluffy-looking exterior is a central core comprised of stinky brown gleba. A few days after the โbasketโ emerges, the white exterior begins to decay away, revealing odorous brown spores. These attract flies who then land on, and subsequently disperse, the fungus about the forest floor.
When conditions are more dry, the white exterior peels off and the base separates from the ground. The basket then rolls about likeโฆa ballโฆ distributing spores as it moves all around.
You can read more about these unusual fungi on iNaturalist and even check out a transverse section revealing the complex internal anatomy.

Thank you to Rafael Moreira for the lovely capture of your โfootballโ fungus.
