On the 2nd of April 1916 Maungapohatu was invaded by 70 Armed Police with the sole intention to arrest Tūhoe P

rophet Rua Kēnana. Prior to the 1916 Invasion, Maungapohatu was once a thriving and vibrant settlement nestled in the heart of Te Urewera, under the leadership of Rua Kēnana. The Maungapohatu Community that existed back in 1916 no longer exists but their are Whānau that go back often to manage farms, houses, stock, and the Maintenance of the Marae. Despite this the traditions of our Ancestors still remain in tact for now and future generations.
