The Rotary Club of Rotorua North visited the thriving community garden at the Hindu Heritage Centre on 25 March 2026, celebrating a shared commitment to community wellbeing, sustainability, and social connection. The visit highlighted the important role the garden plays in bringing people together across cultures and generations, creating a vibrant space where knowledge is shared, healthy living is promoted, and a strong sense of belonging is fostered.

Members of the Rotary Club were welcomed and given a guided tour of the garden, where they engaged with volunteers and learned about ongoing initiatives supporting families, seniors, and youth. The visit was facilitated by Sandy Cleland and Thomas O’Leary, who provided insights into the garden’s development and impact.

The Hindu Council of New Zealand thanked the Rotary Club of Rotorua North for its $1,800 contribution towards seeds, seedlings, garden mix, and related resources.

Please contact Ramba, a Masters student doing research on organic growing of Kumara (sweet potato), if you have experience in growing sweet potatoes in your country.

Ramba Shahi, a Master’s student in Biodiversity Management at Toi Ohomai Institute of Technology, needs some help. She is from Nepal.

Her research is about the organic growing of kumara (sweet potatoes). She wants to conduct interviews on-line with farmers and researchers in other countries about sweet potato growing, soil management, climate, pest and disease management, post-harvest practices, and socio-cultural aspects.

If you know someone in your home country who is knowledgeable about sweet potato farming, please contact Ramba on [email protected] to discuss how she can contact the kumara expert.

Your help will be much appreciated!
