Another awesome working bee yesterday (Sun 7 Jun 2026) - this time giving the Progress Water Race Track some TLC. We got about halfway so we'll have another working bee to complete the full length.

We tackled vegetation cutback with our Slash Squad (The Strim Reaper, Lemony Snippet and The Gorse Whisperer) and clearing deadfall and windfall. This track is a hidden gem - a beaut walk through lush, mossy beach forest and is classified as an easy-to-intermediate walk.

The track follows a short section of the Progress Water Race (5km as an out and back walk). The full water race (around 16 km long) was constructed to provide water to power goldmining operations at Globe Hill during the latter part of the 19th and into the early 20th century. The water from the Progress Race was sufficient to drive the 65 stamp Globe battery on the southern bank of Inangahua River near Crushington. The Water Race has historical value through its association with the Globe-Progress Mine which was second only to the Blackwater complex at Waiuta in terms of output.

Another great Trail Crew induction delivered by RTC and DOC getting our volunteers ready to help look after our tracks and trails. That takes our volunteer count to 27 🥳

Thanks to Terra Firma Mining Ltd and Reefton Engineering for being maintenance superheroes and offering to keep our equipment in tip top shape for free!

This week The Real Strim Shady (a.k.a scrub bar #4 donated by Friends of Waiuta) had a spa day (a.k.a service) in time for our next working bee on Saturday.

We really appreciate the support from our local businesses - thank you! 🫶
