Another great Trail Crew induction delivered by RTC and DOC getting our volunteers ready to help look after our tracks and trails. That takes our volunteer count to 27 🥳

Thanks to Terra Firma Mining Ltd and Reefton Engineering for being maintenance superheroes and offering to keep our equipment in tip top shape for free!

This week The Real Strim Shady (a.k.a scrub bar #4 donated by Friends of Waiuta) had a spa day (a.k.a service) in time for our next working bee on Saturday.

This wee guy lives only in our back yard lets support them to stay there.

The Alborn skink is one of the rarest lizards on Earth – found only in one small site on New Zealand’s West Coast. Without urgent intervention, it could vanish forever.

Construction of a predator proof fence has now been completed and monitoring within the fence over the last 4 months has not detected any mice or other predators within the fenced area.

Work is still being done to determine a total population estimate. We are looking into using trail cameras with AI capability within the fenced area to monitor for predator incursions and reduce the amount of time rangers need to be onsite to undertake monitoring and therefore reduce disturbance to the skinks.

You can support this work through the New Zealand Nature Fund.

Donations will help the skink population to recover to a healthy level, funding pest control, monitoring, and research into whether there are more populations of the skinks living nearby.

The Powerhouse Track at Waiuta that has been closed for 5+ years has been reopened after a big mission this week 🎉
