🪩 BIG RIVER BIG WEEKENDER 🪩

What a working bee! The Reefton Trail Collective Trail Crew partnered with Marlborough 4WD Club this weekend to give Big River Hut some love and maintenance.

Together we:
- Water blasted and stained the side deck
- Fixed/secured the wire netting on boardwalks around the hut
- Fitted two toilet roll holders in the toilet
- Recovered the table with plywood and covered in polyurethane
- Cleaned all the mattresses & patched any holes or tears with duct tape
- Cleaned all the windows & frames
- Swept & wiped down all the bunks, surfaces/shelves & floors
- Swept & cleaned the toilet
- Stocked up the firewood
- Cleaned the fire flue
- Put some new hooks up on the side deck

Thanks to the 4WD team for the transport and for getting stuck in with us. Many hands make light work and we were the first hut ticked off the list for this year's Love our Huts campaign 💚

We all had such a blast we're going to make it an annual thing! 🎉

🔦 TRACK SPOTLIGHT - ALBORNS TRACK 🔦

Alborns Track is a wee gem of a short walk not far from Reefton! It's a loop walk starting from the car park 9 km along Soldiers – Big River Road, which leaves the Reefton highway (SH7) just south of town.

Scattered among old coal-mine workings, you will find remains of makeshift winch equipment, including an old Leyland lorry. You will also see distinctive coal-measure vegetation and views of the Victoria and Paparoa ranges.

If you follow it clockwise it heads along an initial flat tramway that soon rises very steeply, before passing a series of abandoned mines. Cross some small bridges/boardwalks, and you emerge at Fossicker’s Lake (you can connect with the new Fossickers Lake Track from here). You then descend the old coal incline (which can be slippery, take care), pass the old coal bins site, and eventually return to the junction to complete the loop and return to the carpark. It's signposted at 1.5 hours, though at a quick pace you can complete it in 30 min.

Dogs are allowed with a DOC permit.

Some of our Trail Crew headed out on a working bee of a different kind at the weekend - a track assessment of the Waiuta to Big River Track and the Big River 4WD Road, staying at Big River Hut on Saturday night.

With all the rain we've had recently, both tracks are pretty wet. The Waiuta to Big River track has a lot of leaf matter which is soft and slippy and makes slow going on a bike, as well as exposed tree roots and uneven ground. Not to mention the infamous creek 😉 It's quite the adventure 😜

There are currently 3 trees across this track:
🌳Approx 2.2km from the main carpark at Waiuta there is a branch around head height.
🌳Approx 3km from the main carpark at Waiuta there are two trees with multiple branches across the track - can be climbed over but a bit of a pain with a bike.
🌳Approx 10.3km from the main carpark at Waiuta there is a BIG windfall of several trees completely blocking the track above Big River South. There is one big mound then a few trees - around 4 different parts to climb over in total. There were 3 of us with loaded bicycles and even with a team effort it was difficult. Take considerable care if heading this way.

We've passed all our intel onto the Reefton DOC team.
