Just as background to what happened back in 2010.
The FNDC moved to sell the Waima E15 block in 2006 for unpaid rates. It was brought to the attention of Trevor Birch who put up $50,000 (mortgage extension) as a surety in order to delay the sale.
He then brought this to the attention of other shareholders including myself. I offered to take over the surety and it was switched to me.
The FNDC opposed any conversion of the block back into Maori title unless they were paid their ransom. So we had to pay it. The block was then converted back into Māori land and since then it has not had to pay any rates because we just refuse to pay, and they keep extending the 'rates holiday'. (They cannot sell Māori land anymore to get rates, so it is face saving for them Although they could always sue Trevor and I as trustees but they have not [so far] done that.)
I have a TOW claim to get back my 50k, but so far nothing has come of it (after 16 years).
So that is what happened, and if you hear any different, or that people have been making money off the block, the opposite is the case.
