"You have no business being here pine tree!' Jessi and Megan using the cut n paste method to eradicate wilding pines on this beautiful bit of high country in North Canterbury. Wilding conifer trees currently cover 1.8 million hectares of NZ and the spread has been increasing by 5% per year. Without large-scale funding and control, these trees could take over 20% of New Zealand.

Our wilding pine work takes us to some very cool places! If they are too big to cut down we go for the "drill and fill"technique as seen here. Eradicating the wilding pines in places like this allow the native bush to regenerate and thrive without the competition of pine trees, which given the opportunity will out compete our native vegetation.

After three weeks of doing the mahi on wilding pines the crew were excited to be heading back into the Poulter Valley this week. The priorities for this week will be setting out the tracking tunnels, a tool used to determine rodent numbers.
