Investment in the region is always excting news for our rohe, whānau and Ngā Ara Tūhono, a charitable Trust which includes Te Korowai o Wainuiārua chair Aiden Gilbert, Ruapehu mayor Weston Kirton, Tūpoho iwi representative Chris Kumeroa, Ngāti Rangi pou ārahi Helen Leahy, Whanganui Māori tourism representative Hayden Potaka and Whanganui District Council representative Rory Smith as we mahi hard to link the central North Island with the Tasman Sea at Whanganui 🚴‍♀️🚴‍♂️🚴

BIG NEWS FOR OUR TRAILS! 🚴🌿

Further investment has been confirmed for upgrades across key sections of the Mountains to Sea – Ngā Ara Tūhono network.

Over winter and into early summer, work will focus on the Kaiwhakauka Track, Mangapurua Track, and Ohakune Old Coach Road — including bridge replacements, resurfacing, safety improvements, and upgrades to modern Great Ride Grade 3 standards.

Many of the original Mangapurua and Kaiwhakauka bridges started life as modified tramping swing bridges… so let’s just say a few of them have well and truly earned their retirement 😅

There’s still plenty of mahi ahead and we’ve still got to get the spades in the ground — but we’re excited about what this means for our communities, our operators, and the thousands of riders and walkers set to enjoy these trails next spring and summer.

A huge thank you to our partners at DOC and everyone helping make this happen.

We’ll keep everyone in the loop as we keep pedalling forward to make our trails even more incredible 🚴🌿

As we pretty much all reached to plug in our heaters over the last couple of days it’s awesome to see solar panels being installed on the whare kai Marae to help save pūtea 🥰 This has been made possible through a collaboration between Ngā Tāngata Tiaki o Whanganui and energy company Tu Mai Ra 💡🌈💡

Today, Te Korowai o Wainuiārua and Ngāti Rangi trainee kaiako came together to welcome their cohort whānau from Ngā hapū o Mōkai Pātea, Ngāti Haua and Tūwharetoa to Mākaranui Marae, alongside their University of Waikato lecturers Dr Elizabeth Eley and Jay Haydon-Howard marking the beginning of their four-day wānanga at Ruapehu College 🌈🌈🌈

Driven by the vision of growing our own kaiako from within our own rohe and led by Professor Mere Berryman and the University’s Poutama Pounamu team, this two-year accelerated Primary teaching programme is being supported by Te Korowai o Wainuiārua through our Te Ara Tupua Kaikori Mātauranga Jane Welburn and Sjahrne Haitana-Nesbit, the Ngāti Rangi Kaitautoko Whakarite.

Throughout their studies our whānau are being supported through a kaupapa Māori framework across their entire learning journey, including pastoral care, help with paper requirements, te reo Māori development, and access to internet-enabled study spaces. They are also receiving ongoing awhi and guidance from experienced local kaiako, ensuring they are well supported every step of the way 🥰🥰🥰
