Te Kuru - Cashmere Club’s 50th anniversary project.
It was special to be invited to the sod turning/unveiling of Cashmere’s anniversary project - the ‘environment education wharenui’ at the Te Kuru wetlands at Halswell, that are part of the Christchurch water quality and flood emergency scheme.
The architecturally designed wharenui (shelter) will provide an environmental education space for the community, particularly schools. This project meets two of Rotary’s 7 Areas of Focus – ‘Environment’ and ‘Education’.
I commend Rotary (Cashmere) providing this facility for local communities and look forward to the completion of this ambitious project.

A special evening last week attending the second of our District’s anniversary celebrations this Rotary year – Cashmere Club’s 50th anniversary. There I had the honour of making a number of presentations:
• A Certificate from International President Franceso Arezzo recognising the Club’s milestone
• A Rotary Foundation award acknowledging Cashmere’s having contributed US $100k to Foundation funds, to date
• PHF sapphire pins to David Rankin and Alan Morgan (both founding members) acknowledging their special work and achievements
• Certificates recognising 50 years of service to Alan Morgan & David Rankin (Charter Members), Craig Sullivan, John Ruse, and Bob Davies.

The NZ Summit (conference), in Napier, was a special and memorable event attended by some 240 Rotarians from all of NZ’s 5 Districts.

Photos include the D9999 contingent out for dinner, the RYE students, presenter Sam Johnston (Student Army), our own Aaron Fleming (Queenstown), membership breakout slides and the DG’s (NZ) dressed up at the Gala Dinner.

Back on the road again after catchup time at home.
We were delighted to attend Invercargill East Club’s 50th anniversary dinner recently where I presented a certificate from International President Franceso Arezzo recognising the Club’s milestone.
With just 1 founding member able to be there, we acknowledged the founding members including the 12 that have since passed.
Cutting the anniversary cake is President Murray Samson and founding member John French

The Invercargill Club was our District’s highest contributor to ‘Polio Plus’ during 2024-25. The Club also passed a 'Polio Plus' threshold of US $1,500 to qualify for a special Rotary Foundation certificate.

It was my pleasure to present the award, on behalf of our international Foundation, to President Michael Blomfield at their lunchtime meeting recently.

Another highly successful Rotary Young Leaders Awards (RYLA) program last week in Queenstown with 20 exceptional young people engaging in a life changing experience enabled by quality presenters and facilitators and special, for me, to be involved.

Photos include the Shelterbox Teams Challenge, BBQ hosting the Queenstown Club, and the awesome team on Gala Dinner night.

57 very high calibre young South Island adults are now better equipped for their futures thanks to Rotary and our 2 South Island RYLA programs, led by our incredible RYLA organisers Alan Morgan (Cashmere Club) & Lee-Ann Murray (Queenstown Club) along with their awesome support teams.

It was special to meet with the Riccarton Club at their 2 weekly ‘informal’ meetup this week - their trial program mixing up their meetings format.

I presented the Club’s Foundation Chair, Valda Cordes, with a ‘Club Annual Donor Level 1’ Certificate recognising the Riccarton Rotary’s giving to the Rotary Foundation. During the 2024-25 Rotary year, the Club’s contribution was more than US$100.00 per member – that excluding the giving by members as individuals.
The photo includes 2024-25 Club President, Coran Murfitt.

Clubs that exceeded US$100 giving per member, during 2024-25, were Ashburton Plains, Blenheim, Bishopdale-Burnside, Christchurch South, Greymouth, Queenstown, Riccarton, Waimate and the e-Club of WASH.

A very special time this week being part of RYLA (Rotary Young Leadership) in Christchurch. Great to be amongst 37 exceptional young adults engaging in life skills experiences led by quality presenters and facilitators.

A very special thanks to the Cashmere Rotary Club RYLA team, led by Alan Morgan, for hosting and leading this special Rotary event.

Happy New Year everyone!
At home catching up on Rotary backlog and an opportunity to assist my Queenstown Club, and Inner Wheel members, provide lunch for Camp Quality (CQ) - in town this week giving kids with, or recovering from, cancer a great experience.
I admire the many CQ adults here giving a week to running activities, preparing meals, and providing support.

Here we are, right on Xmas. A lapse in recent Facebook activity for us - we are back home in Queenstown and catching up on domestic activities as well as some outside of Rotary.

Thank you for your contributions this year in whatever your role in Rotary – your efforts are very much appreciated and valued. It’s now time for a break and to recharge the batteries.

Heather and I wish you an enjoyable, relaxed and safe Xmas-New Year break with those close to you and we look forward to continuing our work with you again in 2026.

The Waimate Club is again the highest giving Club to the Rotary Foundation, in District 9999.
It was a priveledge to attend their annual Foundation Dinner & Auction last week and to present the Club a banner for the most ‘World Fund per capita Giving’ for District 9999 during 2024-25 plus a ‘Club Annual Donor Award’ certificate for exceeding US $250 average per member.
I was also able to show off the ‘NZ Total Giving Award’, presented to our District at the recent South Pacific/Zone 8 Conference at Coolungatta, that the Waimate contributed to - the auctioneer frequently referred to it as the Ranfurly Shield.
Very well done Waimate - thank you.
